Everyone’s been predicting the same thing for a while now: AI chatbots will answer customer questions directly, nobody will click through to an actual website anymore, and small business sites will slowly become irrelevant. New data from Bluehost says that’s not really what’s happening.
In its first State of Small Business AI Confidence report, based on a May 2026 survey of 350 U.S. small business owners, Bluehost found that 34% of respondents say their website actually became more important once they started using AI. Only 4% said the opposite. The rest said it stayed about the same. So instead of fading into the background, websites are becoming more central for a meaningful chunk of small businesses, not less.
There’s a reason for that. AI tools need something to read and reference when they’re deciding what to recommend, and a website with clear, structured information becomes the raw material AI search pulls from. Businesses that have figured this out early are seeing it pay off. Owners actively optimizing their sites for AI search report revenue growth scores 3.4 times higher than those who’ve merely heard the term and haven’t done anything about it yet.
That gap matters because most small businesses haven’t moved yet. Only 13% are currently optimizing for AI visibility, while another 35% know it’s a thing but haven’t taken action. Meanwhile, 87% of small businesses already use some form of AI, and ChatGPT alone shows up in 73% of them. Specialized marketing or SEO tools barely register by comparison, sitting below 12% adoption each.
Confidence, more than spending, seems to separate the businesses pulling ahead from everyone else. Only 20% of owners feel genuinely confident using AI well, and that holds true even among people paying for subscriptions. What actually predicts better outcomes is time spent practicing: businesses that have used AI for more than two years report roughly double the revenue growth of newer adopters.
None of the technical groundwork here is new. Structured data and schema markup have existed for years. What’s changed is that doing it well now has a measurable link to whether AI tools find a business worth recommending at all.
