Free hosting

Do you trust free hosting provider?

As they say ' You get what you paid for'.
with free hosts, you have no comeback.

1) They will allow anyone to host with them (hackers/spammers etc.)
2) As its free they will not have any paid security features on their servers.
3) They could just close down the server without warning and you lose everything.

All of the above place your websites at risk and also any devices you use to connect to your hosted websites.

Is it really worth taking that risk

Also if you are in business then would you want to deal with someone that wont pay for their site to be hosted on a secure server as handing over any details to this business could leave you as a customer at risk.

You can look at the concept of what sort of free hosting is offered

When I started my first hosting business in 1999, I had 1 server which I offered free hosting, but this was only ever offered to registered charities (needed to provide charity number, so I could verify) and community groups (needed to be registered with local authority), if they failed either of these then they did not get free hosting, but this server was just as secure as all my servers and i gave the same level of support

There are some companies that provide free hosting, but they provide subdomains instead of the primary domain. For example, if you create a blog in Wix, Blogger, or WordPress, you will receive a subdomain where you can host your product information, and you can use that subdomain to host your website.

Do you think someone hires a Reseller Hosting Service to give you something for free? It is unthinkable for me to have such a "service." These almost without exception end in disappointment.

A lot of free hosting is offered in the same way you get free TV on commercial channels. You agree to have adverts on your websites and or links to your WebHost (look at Wix, they will give you free hosting, but a link to them remains on your pages) or I have seen Free host giving you free hosting, but you have to purchase the domain from them along with SSL cert (both at a higher than normal price), but with a free host you have no security in respect that they could just close down the server and you have lost all your files.
Also with free hosting, you will just get basic hosting. no DDOS protection, No backups, no server security, etc. as all these costs money.

I would say, that usually, free hostings are just a cover for a paid one. Like a curtain: you use their services during a week and then they come and ask you to prolong licence, membership, etc.

I don't trust paid hosting providers. I will never be at their mercy again. Three years ago, my best client and I migrated her website to one of the most popular hosting outfits out there... You know one that's always on the top five or ten list. After prepaying for 12 months we were kind of stuck. Their SSL would not work and they would not let us upload our own because they were charging $300 a year for it.

It took support for ever to remedy the problem and I believe my client thought it was all my fault. I was looking like a big clown. I even suggested them.

Now I have two dedicated servers and three virtual servers. If something breaks I fix it immediately. The biggest problem with free hosting is there is no money coming in. It's only a matter of time before customer service goes South and the whole thing goes down the tube. And good riddance to them. Someday we will learn that there is no free lunch.

You are aware these lists mean nothing as it's just an advertising platform, the more money a company is willing to pay the higher up the list they are placed, this is how it's always the same large companies in the top 5.
I was once approached by one of these companies asking me if I pay them ÂŁ10,000 they will guarantee me a top 10 spot, but if I pay more then I can get a higher spot.

I offer free hosting to potential clients, so they can try out my services and give feedback.
The free accounts will have limitations, like bandwidth, disk space and potentially demo mode would be enabled depending on who's requesting the free account, etc (You can still edit your site within the sitepad dashboard you just can't upload or edit the code manually )
Even though its a free account you get all the same features as if you were paying for it, Security software the lot. The only reason we would suspend or terminate the account would be if the powered by watermark was removed from there website or some other breach of our terms and conditions and in that case we would send the client a full copy of the website from the date of termination.
So I would only trust it as far as testing the waters, I wouldn't recommend clients setting up there whole business from a free account as yes that could be disastrous. But I thing every provider is different on how they provide free services to there existing or new clients.

Basically, you are describing a trial account that is different from free hosting.
I myself had a separate server that I offered free hosting to registered charities and community groups, but to get these they have to provide their charity number (which I would check and verify before enabling hosting) and community groups had to be registered community groups with the local authority, so I could check this before enabling hosting

If the provider is classing themselves as a free only provider it's a massive red flag. We as a hosting company only offer free hosting to charities we support. They get the same security features. But it's obviously limited amount of accounts. I remember when i was like 18 years old i had my first blog on geocities  those were they days! but at that time there were plenty of dodgy free ones claiming without ads and for sure they were just trying to steel data.

Geocities was huge back in the day, I think I read somewhere that when Yahoo bought it was the third most visited web property in the world.

Also interesting that Japan (where people still use fax machines) Geocities only actually shut down a couple of years ago.

I do think the web was a better place back then. Not in speed but in less spam or maybe the spam was right in front of us haha
