Your First Web Hosting Experience

The first web space I had was a free one at GeoCities ... in April 97

Then I left there when their TOS or something suddenly started reading that they owned the copyright on any & all pages posted on their servers. I didn't like that.

Then I went with a "pay for" web host ... which I no longer remember the name of and believe they are now out of business anyways. I got a free domain name ... then a year later (or so) I was "informed" about a policy change. They now OWNED all domain names associated with accounts on their servers ... and my monthly cost was going up by about 50% ... or something like that. About the same time my sites started being offline more than on. So I lost that domain name when I went with a NEW host.

That one I went to was another I forget the name of ... but ... servers were in California & web host was in Alaska some where. Better pricing ... my first Reseller Account ... which I wanted because of all the bells & whistles. They started getting "funny" when I expanded my website. Strange. Especially because it wasn't that big & not even close to using up the bandwidth allowance. Found out later that because of a page or two on my website, which was about what disables me & I expanded on some of my symptoms. One page involved a sort of explanation on how the disease affected my genital region & sex life. Nothing gross or worded indelicately. But they took exception for some reason and asked me to move. Like ... daaaaaaahhhh ????

But thats my first 3 and you wanted only the first one. Oooops ... got carried away again. Sorry

miditech.com back in 2000. I chose them because they were the first host I saw when searching for a host in Ontario. I was paying $35 a month for a single site. A few months later, I started up 2 more sites, so (logically), I bought 2 more $35-a-month plans. :idiot:

Soon afterwards, I discovered "reseller plans" and started paying more reasonable rates.

My first hosting experience was with Angelfire (a Lycos Company). It satrted out as a free account way back in the day when thats all they had, but then when they added there paid accounts, I went and bought the cheepest account so that I could have a .com. That was probably the biggest pain in the butt that I have ever had to deal with. I think spent about 3 months venturing into other servers to see which one would do what I wanted it to do and that is how I found Lunarpages. I have been with them ever since and i'm running 3 sites on one account. I have very little complaints about them.

My first host was 'hostjunky'

They looked like they had nice plans, and at the time, I had no idea what bandwidth was. I used it for a nice big community of the game Counter-Strike, but our community was for special maps (Surf maps) Only, so we had mappacks that were 100+MB In Size.

Little did I know, about 4 days after I bought the hosting, I was shut down due to bandwidth over usage =\

That was nearly two years ago, and now I am much more knowledgeable than I used to be.

My first was with freeservers, then I had gotten a free domain name from enom I belive it was and hosted with a side project of rackspace and I cannot remember the name it's been so long.

Hi, This post is very informative, however I would like some specific information. If someone can help me then please send me a private message. Best Regards,

My first web site was with freeservers. I was just looking to learn to do some web programming. I remember that I could not believe that they would give away free web space - all they wanted was to have a banner at the top of the site. Free sub-domain too, domainname.freeservers.com. They continually tried to upgrade you for $2 a month I think it was and they would remove the banner.

wow I can't even remeber the first hosting company i used I do remember the fist dedicated server I had it was with superb and they charged me for everything. I started to think for $100.00 to do a fifteen min job was a rip that when i went out and started buy my own servers and colo them and then finally found a datacenter close to me here in Michigan and been there since become good friends with the owners and we help each outher out when need. Seeing I'm closer to the center then they are I can pop in faster to help with issues.

I know this is an older post but since it has been brought back up and I was MIA for some time I will add a bit to it.

When I first started with simple websites and that i went from free web host to free web host. I swear I tried them all. At that time I had no idea what an ftp program was let alone mysql and php. I had no idea of what features were what and what i wanted. So I just stuck with the simple hosts.

After a few years or so and more time on the pc I started reading and exploring the hosting industry. From there I bought my first hosting plan with PE Hosting. There service was good for my needs at the time.

Shortly after having my own paid hosting account I gained a friend that had a resellers account. I thought that was greatest thing in the world. Fortunately for me has was not very smart with this type of thing and asked for my help. Now that I was helping him with this resellers account I found the need to read and learn more about the hosting market. Within 2 weeks he gave up the resellers account because he had no idea what he was doing.

Well then it became my time to get a resellers account. I can't remeber for the life of me who it was with but i got it, LOL. I sold a few plans from a small company that I started. With the few plans I got there I got the urge that I wanted more and more, but I knew that I could don't expand enough on a resellers account. So again i went back to reading, studying, and gathering all the information i could about running a server.

Then 2 years ago i grabbed my first server from the planet. Oh my, I was dumbfounded. So many settings and stuff I did not learn. Lets just say I learned the rest from mistakes and just trial and error.

Now I run my successful company with clients on our own managed dedicated servers and everything just seems to fall into place.

What a long road huh!!!

haha

Wow, I should buy www.webhosting.com ! Well, it wasnt my first host, my first host was bad bad bad....1&1!! Stay away. Ever since I've been researching hosts like clockwork, I hate hosts that rip people off and thats exactly what 1&1 did.

My first host was geocities / tripod this was way way back then when hosting was free. Havent visit them for while wonder if they are still alive..

My first webhost till date are www.eukhost.com and I have been with them since 2004. Haven’t had any big problems with them except some small issues which every webhosting company has to face I guess but their support is excellent and can take care of any issues with ease I must say. Support and uptime has never been a problem except for a couple of times when my site was being transferred on the other server.
So in a nut shell I would just say that it’s a very reliable hosting company which people can trust and opt for.
