Windowshosting vs linux hosting

I don't know that free opensource is so much the future, because it doesn't pay the bills.

People cannot continue to hire staff, support their products, and develop future products for no money.

You'll find a lot of open source projects going to a paid commercial model, just look around.

Yet in some way, free/semi free software has always been present, as even commercial companies have tried to get advantage of the viral exposure that the "free" distribution can provide. Shareware was such an adaptation. Crippled but free versions are another one.

Free open source might be an extreme version, but it has arguably been the most successful version of free, and has quite a strong following, especially considering that it goes so much against the well established, orthodox models of the past. It may be that not everything should be individually paid for in the computing world. Just as you don't have to pay a direct fee to be allowed to use the sidewalk, you might not have to pay a direct fee to use certain "free" software.

The future can bring things we don't even dream about. Out grandparents can certainly testify for the validity of that statement. :)

Take Apache and MySQL as examples.

You can use them for FREE !! which is brilliant.
they are also constantly being developed and improved !

You can then buy commercial versions from them which include support if you need it.

the open source model works... its proven by companies like Apache and MySQL :)
