Will google lunch its hosting service??

I would doubt that they would steal that much of the hosting market clients as existing clients already have satisfied solutions with their current hosts (for the most part).

I think it would be stupid if google started a hosting bussiness.
I certainly didn't have one hosting-ad on their adsense sytem if they did. :crash: :thumbdown

I personally think that they would make a lot of money off of it and it would be very lucrative since they are a well known and trusted name. I think it would be very smart of them, but they have many other ongoing projects to be concerned with and hosting would probably be more trouble to them than its worth.

I think that Google should launch a hosting company. They already are well known by 99% of the people that are on the Internet. Launching a hosting service will make Google a force to reckon with. I think that the hosting company will not be free, but I'm sure you will find amazing deals...

If Google did what domain would they use?
Ghost.com = Symantec website
gsite.com = taken, some hosting site
gweb.com = taken, some hosting site (SLOW!)
googlehost.com = taken but not active

This is assuming they stick with the "g" theme.

They could use hosting.google.com and I think they might be able to get googlehost.com because of trademark laws. I am not sure of what these laws say, however. I would like it for Google to go into the hosting industry--many people already know of it and adding it could be very easy. Maybe they could also become a registrar and register domain names. Google could become the most visited site on the Internet (and the most profitable ;)).

Google has the money to get any domain name they want, assuming that those people would accept possible thousands for a name that they were to use. I personally think that Google should stay away from hosting, because it can be a messy industry that can get them a bad name. It can also become very expensive for them. If they were to become a host, I'm sure that they would apply to become an accredited registrar. I think that it is unlikely that this will happen anytime soon.

Maybe they should stay away from hosting because it is a "messy industry", but becoming an accredited registrar would allow them to have an extra source of revenue.

They really don't need an extra source of revenue from what I see. I think that they are going to focus on their primary goal, searching. Even through the launch of Gmail, the big development was not only the amount of space, but the fact that you can easily organize and search for emails.

I would want them to stay away from the hosting industry as, quite honestly, it would **** on the little guys. Which includes me :)

Google does gain a lot of money from their search. Maybe they should keep hosting and domain name registration in mind for a back-up plan. They don't seem like they are going to fade away from the net any time soon.

Was thinking the same thing, but didn't want to say it. But since you did, I'll admit to that! :mic:

Also, I don't think that Google wants to become another Yahoo. Many (including myself) fled from yahoo because of their poluted site with ads and popups. Yahoo just seems to have too much on their plate and finds themselves competing with Google for the latest search technology.

Actually, if Google started a hosting service I doubt it would be the little guys that would get hit the most. It won't be easy for them, but the hit would be most likely be felt rapidly by the big hosting companies. (IMHO)

Your probably right. They will have the resources and ability to compete with the larger companies with private datacenters, but it will definitely take away from smaller companies since, IMO, many people will flock to google because of name recognition; people who may have otherwise shopped around and found a smaller company.

If Google were to go into the hosting industry, all hosting companies would feel the effect. This would mean that companies might advertise a little more and they would, overall, try and offer a very competitive offer compared to Google. I'd say that more people visit Google than any one of the hosting companie's websites. This means that Google will take away business from all of the hosting companies--big and small.

The author makes some very good points about how easy it truly would be for Google to just decide one day, "Hey! Lets try hosting!" but of course it would be another revelation in the hosting industry as it will be done the "Google Way."
That's exactly the point I am trying to make. Google has it so easy when it comes to website advertising. All they have to do is post a link on their homepage (like the tsunami relief one that is there now).

That would be cool to have google launch some kind of hosting business, whether it be free or paid. Personally, I have always found google to be reliable, and since they seem to lead the undustries they enter, I would probably be interested in their hosting services if their prices are low enough.
