It seems strange to me that potential clients should give any credence to testimonials displayed on a web host site. Where, in your opinion, are testimonials best sought/placed?

Fake testimonials are everywhere, myself personally would only trust a review for a web host if it is backed by the domain name. That way you can check the site out, check the speeds, check where it is actually hosting etc

You can gather and place testimonials all around your website. We have some with a sliding effect on our homepage, on software landing pages and a main reviews/survey page.

We then use these testimonials (all backed with domain URLs) in our advertisement threads.

Hosting forums and word of mouth. A happy client will recommend their services to others.
Also reply to other people's topics on forums and assist them with problems they are having. This tells people you are knowledgeable and are able to assist with problems.

It is by far the best way in my experience.
Offer a good service, and eventually people will recommend you.

Even better if they're on Twitter and Facebook. That'll get you huge exposure to their followers.

Apart from that, forums and graphical advertisements on said forums.

You need to know people that work closely with your target audience that can recommend your product. Everything else you do should simply be a build-up towards this.
