What to do when you have power outages?

The majority of web hosts have UPS's and protection for power outages.
But if you don't, what steps do you all take when customers sites go down?
This is something I was just curious about.

That would not be a good situation to be in - You should avoid by all means, actions let your customers know what’s going on, clients appreciate being kept in the know.

Next, assess the situation, Is it long lasting or few mins outage, figure out the issue and its impact. Can you use portable generators or temporarily move critical sites to a backup location? If so, prioritize restoring essential services first.

After the outage, share a brief summary with customers about what happened and what steps you’ll take to prevent it in the future. It’s also a good time to seriously consider investing in UPS or other redundancy solutions to avoid this in the long run..

Always use Tier3 or better datacenters - it pays off.

Make sure generators and UPS's are available. Unless someone is trying to run a web hosting business from their garage or basement, I'm unsure why these wouldn't be available from a DC?

Very few data centers don't have a generator. A UPS goes a long way, even if you have to provide your own. A UPS is very critical, if monitored - then you can shutdown in case of emergency.

That's a great question. During the recent storm in North Carolina, USA, many data centers faced network and power problems. The most important solution is to inform users and provide them with timely compensation properly. If we ever face a power outage and a site goes down, we quickly assess the situation and communicate transparently with our customers. We prioritize restoring services as fast as possible and keep everyone updated throughout the process.

I completely agree. It is very important to inform your users if you encounter any issues, as well as provide clear timelines for their resolution. Of course, having UPS systems and generators is essential to ensure safety and continuity, but even these measures cannot guarantee complete protection.

What truly matters is maintaining transparency with your clients—keeping them informed about the situation, explaining exactly what is happening, and, most importantly, showing that you are actively working on a solution.

In the end, offering compensation for any inconvenience caused is a professional way to demonstrate that you value your customers and their trust in your services.
