What is the best server to have when you are reselling? I'm thinking to start with VPS but I'm considering dedicated as well because its bigger. Please advice me on this?

Depends what you want to resell and on which stadium of your business you curently are - if you want to start - start small, vps will suffice imho.

I'd start with either a VPS (if you have experience with linux and managing servers) or a master reseller package from a reliable provider

You could go for a VPS, though a small one isn't really a good option for that, just as a cheap dedicated isn't one either IMHO. If I were to choose something in a given budget, I'd probably go for a VPS as long as the underlying hardware configuration is good.

There are VPSes of all sizes, and the larger the more cost effective they are, as the overhead is proportionally smaller.

You can start with a vps, then move if you need.
Vps is simpler to upgrade if you need more resources.

Good luck.

Thanks for the comments guys. I will consider VPS for this time because all of you said that its the best option for starters.

About the Master Reseller Package, how does that work? Could you please elaborate a little?

To start with dedicated server is always a better idea...but the first thing to be considered is your budget to start with..VPS is cheap.

If you can invest for a dedicated server there is nothing good than having a dedicated server rather than a VPS.

If you want to do something then do it right... which is start with a dedicated server, even though you will end up spending more than you win for some time you will earn long term customers that will appreciate that you're not reselling from others...

You got a point. Having a VPS will cost me a little money but I could not gain long term customers, which in the long run is the main goal for reselling.

Thanks for that information, I will rethink my decision on what type of server I would get.

Hello
1. Give your customers better service. As a reseller provider, your number one priority should be customer service. This is where you can shine above the larger companies, since they likely have many customer service representatives who are likely not monitored regularly. Even more, they may even hire overseas representatives to keep their overhead low. By providing excellent customer services, you have the best chance at building a strong customer base. The number one rule a reseller should live by is MAKE SURE YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY.

2. Know how to grow. As a reseller, you will be responsible for growing your own customer base. For this reason, it is important to know where to market and who to market to. Small business owners are a good start. You can advertise that you, the owner, will work directly with them whenever they have any questions, concerns, or need technical help. This is give them the comfort of knowing that they will not have to deal with a customer service representative if something happens with their account.

3. Customize your hosting plans. If you are able to split your ‘plans’ up how you want them, advertise that you can make a customized plan specific to the customer’s individuals needs. You can also let them know that, as their business or website grows, their plan can grow with them. You may also want to split up some very tiny plans and sell them for $1-2 a month. These would have just enough space for a 5-10 page basic personal website and include no extras. To someone who needs a very small amount of space, such as a parent whose child wants a website, $1 a month will look much better that $5-$10. You can also require that a year or so is paid in advance, to make this tactic worth your time. If you are able to gain enough customers via this method, it may be much more profitable that selling larger plans.

That was really an eye opener for me. I really like your 3rd strategy. Do you know how I could advertise my own business without costing me a lot?

What I mean is, I could offer $1 or $2 a month to a client but my advertisement might be greater than my income. What could you suggest about this?

In my opinion, offering products at $1 or $2 is probably not a great idea. The people who would seriously consider a provider at that pricepoint will most likely require the most support, and that can very easily turn into time sponge.

Everything else that smilly123 said, again in my opinion, is rock solid though. If you don't have your own network then you need to offer a serious value add to your product. That is probably gonna be superior support.

be persistent on advertising. Try and get your self a nice dedicated server, something like an atom powered server something in the 79 dollar range. Else get yourself a highpowered vps eithere way look at spending about 100 a month. with cpanel whmcs fantastico, and advertising.

It actually depends on your requirements. If you are confident enough and think that you will get good amount of customers, you can choose a dedicated server, however, if you are not too sure about the number of customers you will get, it would be better to consider a VPS for now and upgrade when you require more resources in future :)

Hi, May I know you are newbie as a hosting reseller? If yes, you may consider to be the shared hosting reseller first so that you could get familiar about managing your client while the hosting provider can fully support your customer if there is technical issue.

I wouldnt start with a dedicated server, esspecially since this market is already overcrowded as it. Start with a vps and work your way up, unless you have a lot of money to loss from the bat

Starting with small is the best idea. In the initial stage it is advisable to start with small one. In future when need arises you can go for dedicated server.

i'm agree with henry, actually depend on your requirements.

Reseller allows you to concentrate more on your marketing/advertising your service rather than managing them.

While on the other hand it won't give you as much control as managing your own (e.g. when client requested to have a certain module/extension to be installed).

I would highly recommend that you start with a reseller package from a reliable provider. Not only does it give you more time to focus on the logistical aspects of your business but it will save you a lot of money in terms of start up cost.
