Litespeed and Apache .. we have had the same experience with both of them , however its again the configuration that will be done for both to get the max and good performances.

Depending on what it's being used for, NGINX / lighttpd are super fast. We typically use Apache unless something specific is requested though...

The server to be fast will depend on the use of the server, the applications that you want to install on the server will be a major factor. I personally use Apache server and find it preety good.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it but, we've been taking a look at Varnish; specifically, the Unixy Plugin with their custom VCL.

I agree, just look around if you are willing to pay go with LiteSpeed, if Free sounds good to you, go with Apache.
