In these days there are hundreds of domain extensions available, what would be best domain extension after .com

I would think .net and .org would be the most popular after .com, but what's popular is not always best for your specific website.

You are asking about the "best" top level domain, but you need to consider that answering this question is impossible without knowing what it is you are looking for. Best in terms of being the most popular? Best in terms of SEO acceptance? Best in terms of long-term value and resale? Best for web hosting? Best for a personal blog website?

Obviously .com is still very much the king in terms of all of the above (except personal usage). And .net, .org, .info, .us, .biz have been around so long that they have accumulated a large number of registrations. .net is still the next best thing after .com in most cases.

Whether .info or .org is best for your business? Doubt it.

You also touched on hundreds of extensions, which means you also refer to new global TLDs that appeared on the market in recent months and years. I suggest looking at sites like https://ntldstats.com/tld and https://namestat.org/ to grasp which extensions proven to be more popular over this time. However, you'd also see .xyz closer to top on the list, which is one domain to definitely stay away from.

Now, in my perspective, the better all-around domains out of the ngTLDs would be .co, .site, .io, .online is not bad also, except it is longer to type.

PS: The hosting industry has two specific gTLDs to choose from: .host and .hosting

There are so many new TLD's are available nowadays like so I suggest you consider them. :)

.hosting/.host for hosting business.
.agency for web development agency.
.hotel for hotel business.
And much more. :)

.com is by far the most popular and the most recognizable of the domain name extensions. But after .com it is said that .net is the second most popular domain extension.

.io seems to be popular with tech companies, mainly because it can represent input/output.
After .com, I'd go for .net. I'd also try to get .io.

I would say .net and .org are good ones after .com , but you can also go for country based TLDs like .ca , .com.au , .in and others.

The obvious ones are .net and .org but I'd actually say .blog has a good chance depending on how it's marketed of really putting a dent in market share as just about everyone is building a blog these days.

depending on your type of website. whether it is organization , government ,information page , personal page, blogging site, etc.
you can also target your customers based on geo location like .uk, .in , .nl , etc.

It s true .com could be the most popular domain extension. But I can perceive that less popular extensions such as .cfd, .sbs, .xyz and .buzz are gaining popularity among the young populations

good question,
in global its .net
in your country, its your country cctld, ie .uk for united kingdom

This is a very old post, but the question is no less relevant today. @Cheapest has got it right. It is not about the quantity of TLD registrations. It depends which market you aim to serve.

.COM is great if you trade on a global market. As a Canadian registrar, we always recommend going for .CA if you plan to serve Canadians first, as they are more likely to choose .CA while shopping. Same with any country's ccTLD if you operate in that market. A local domain will also play out more favourably in your local search rankings.
