What is most important when setting up a web server?

Yes, the hardware and the network are important they are the foundation to a good internet solution provider.

Then security, and prevention by the company to protect its clients from the threats we all face. If the company can not manage security properly your site will have issues. Do not be afraid to ask questions!

Another thing to remember is not all providers are the same, so you have to decide on what services and products you want and what they are worth to you.

And finally the glue that holds it all together is the customer support.

I recommend you research what other people say about the company.

And finally you get what you pay for.

Be careful, if it seems to good to be true then it probably is.

Before I even look at a price, I have to see a good uptime, stable networks and good reviews.

Before putting another provider in charge of our network, they control certain aspects such as hardware, network etc. So I need to know they can keep up with my reputation.

Then price is not too much of an issue, if the network is proven to be stable. I like to buy a server, and set it up to be monitored intensly via our backend systems, disk, cpu etc etc, before I take the plunge and putting it into production.

I like to check the support, see how technical savy they are, we don't wan't googlers now do we lol.

It depends on many things, network, stability, uptime, price is not too much an issue.

I rarely need support, so I really only care that someone is there should the network see problems.

Network uptime, technical support, hardware quality and price. If they don't provide ssl/domain reseller, etc. you can always purchase them for elsewhere.

I look for automation. (Like KVM support to servers for dedicated servers (self install))
Fast 1 Gigabit Network
Good quality hardware, speed without reliability sucks!!!
Good price point, not cheap, but not expensive.
(If you are using servers from a company likely to go bankrupt, then you are also likely to go bankrupt!)

You should put your backups with someone other than your main provider.

If you are a good reseller/hosting company, you should source your domains and SSL certificates from somewhere else, incase their service gets worse and you want to run!

Individually, people should give priority to server stability ,then customer service, pricing and so on. Of course, with a high reputation in hosting market would be the best.

Re :

I would prefer,

100% Uptime SLA
Full Management
24/7 Proactive Monitoring

Full System Security Lockdown
R1Soft CDP Backup
KVM over IP2

SSL VPN2
Redundant HSRP
Web App. Firewall

If the servers provide security and stability price is not a big concern. Along with this the support also plays an important role.

...and has a good backup plan in place in case he gets hit by a car or suffers an injury while skying or worse, and can't work for weeks in a row. ;)

So much for one-man shows LOL There's always an elevated risk when you trust your data to a one man show or a provider that's only been in business for a couple of months. Some don't mind taking that risk, but most do. Fortunately, there are plenty of prospects to go around.

Hi all.
I am curious to know, when a host company is looking to providers for servers, what are the main factors they are looking for?
Is it the price of the hardware or capability? Both?
Are services like getting SSL certs, domain registry, backup solutions better if all offered via one company?

I would like your feedback as I am very interested in finding out what exactly host companies are after when looking to a provider to fulfill their needs.

Thank you all and I look forward to your responses.

1. Price / Hardware
2. Internet connection and datacenter in general (should be certified)
3. Support

It will be intresting to caculate comulative effect of big company failure like the planet and total effect of small companies falures. I am pretty shure we will have absolutely same numbers.

Think hardware should be at the top of the list. This will also make sure your web server can do better and be more reliable in high traffic.
