What advertisement methods you use when promoting your company?
For me it's the following,

1. Forums and Blogs
2. Google Adwords (#1 i use)
3. Link buliding and general SEO optimization
4. Try to consult private companies or customers.
 
All this methods are necessary and very useful in order to reach maximum people. as far as online marketing is concerned it is endless you can try various options to reach the customer
 
Don't forget about social networking outside of blogs and forums. And Press Releases - and article submissions.
 
Sometimes you need to trial and error it. There are some things that work for many but not all. For right now we are working on a great many article submissions, but its just a pain trying to organize it. I was told we were going with our next launch next week, but someone decided to change it over the weekend so guess who is going to be working late tonight? :)

Article submission is a pain and would only be good if you spin the articles around every 4 directories. Not just couple sentences i mean the whole article.
 
With regards to Facebook not working - it could have been your target demographic or even how the advertisement is laid out.

Even on google adwords, you need to do A/B testing, B/C testing and A/C testing. You should have multiple advertisements pitting against each other and variations for days, times and demograpics. Never should you have an advertisement in only one form. Different layouts and wording will produce different results.

your local Business Journal publication
Chamber of Commerce
Newspaper
Penny Savers and similar distributions

Don't forget Direct Mail - it's not dead! ;)

I think this depends on the core focus of your business. For some, concentrating on SEO works. For others, direct marketing may bring in higher profit margins.

Of course all of these things are important but what about clever ads? I think we all lose sight of the importance of humor and creativity sometimes.
