VPS Issues

From what I'm seeing, 1GB Ram is the ideal. A person can start with with 512GB and run a few domains on it, maybe 20 or 25 depending. Then after that it's a good idea to upgrade to 1GB.

i would not try 20 domains/sites on a 512MB box with cPanel. you may at a push get 10 domains/sites to run effectively

if you only want a VPS to run your own site then 512mb may be OK

Well Don't go with the most widely used control panel but yes cpanel is much better and secured than others and if you say so the try plesk you will never say cpanel is best..:)

where did i say cPanel was the best.

99.99% of anyone looking for a host for their site will be using cPanel.

i have tied all the control panels, but to gain large numbers of clients you need cPanel

I find Plesk easier to use than cPanel, however Plesk lacks some functionality that cPanel offers. I use both and run two servers since I'm starting out. Maybe later on if my company grows I will try other software as well. There are some things when using Plesk that I simply do on the server and don't even use it. One example is with a site that required two data bases with the same user. If you go into the Domains this isn't possible, but if you go into the Plesk panel outside of the domains and access phyMyAdmin directly then you can do whatever you need to do in there and override Plesk. My concern was how Plesk would handle that but it wasn't an issue and when I deleted the domain I simply went back into phpMyAdmin and undid what I originally set up. cPanel has issues also that require manual setup. webmail for example I believe requires a manual configuration so it can be accessed at webmail.yourdomain.com where Plesk does that automatically.

Yes you can do that with Plesk, but in the real world of webhosting as i said 99.99% of people and sites that want to host with you will be using cPanel.
Cpanel may not be the best or easiest to use but its the number 1 control panel that is used.

So, the hosts that don't use cPanel are not serious vendors?
not that serious as their is not the demand for other control panels as their is for cPanel. i have tired many others in my 11 years in the hosting business.

Can I ask where you get that number please?

check the offers section on here, WHT and the many other hosting forums and you will see that 99.99% of offering are cPanel as this is what is most commonly used.

i have tried offering hosting with Plesk, DA, kloxo etc. and these do not produce the clientbase to run a profitable business.

Your posts always make me laugh. Thanks for that :))

What will you install on windows server? Companies selling windows server are not in profit? Can you host php and asp both with cpanel? . Have you ever compared price of shared windows hosting and linux hosting? Plesk is the most used control panel on windows server. Enkompass market is very less compared to plesk and its a separate product of cpanel for only windows server.

Just a side note:

I've made more money with singles sites than I have with web hosting. I may focus on that for a bit and see what comes of it. It's also easier to manage because all you have to do is a little support work and just check new registrants, the software does all the work.

I do have my web hosting site redeveloped and moved to one of my new VPS's and will see how that goes. I have two of them but thinking that may be too much of an expense starting out. I did it because I want the ability to offer cPanel and Plesk. I personally like Plesk better even though it lacks some functionality. cPanel isn't as intuitive as Plesk but offers more functionality.

Slow support is always a reason for hosting customers to leave :)

too true, but a host can reduce support requests if they have an extensive knowledgebase that will cover most situations.

Knowledgebase is a built in feature of WHMCS, but i am amazed at how many WHMCS installation i come across and this is blank

I'm about to lose my patience with my upstream provider. I ordered another VPS last night, they set it up this morning and messed the password up and I can't login. So I submit a support ticket and they ask, which server is it? (DUH) After I already made that obvious to them. *sigh So I replied and typed it in simple terms so dummies can comprehend it. It's been all day and they still haven't got this fixed. Does anyone know of a reliable host that provides reasonably priced VPS plans to someone who had paid their account on time every month for the past 10 years?

Hello there,

Sorry to hear that you're facing issues with your current provider. I'd encourage that you check out the offers section found on the main directory of HostingDiscussion.

As for the current provider, you may want to run it by the management of the company on how you feel as I could only imagine that maybe a new technician was assigned to your ticket, or possibly the company is outsourced where the technicians may not have access to the node that you're currently facing issues with.

Just a few suggestions and I wish you the best of luck!

If your going to be offering cpanel and are a startup webhost and looking to provide a good service at a low cost to yourself then you could get a vps because the cpanel licence for a vps is cheaper than the cost of a dedicated licence.
