UK vs USA hosting

I'm in the UK & ideally would like my new site hosted in the UK as I prefer to use the ".net" rather than ".co.uk" as my domain...and I really want good google.co.uk results

There is such a HUGE price difference between UK & USA hosting though....an unbelievable difference.

One company had a UK & USA base, heres a brief rundown of comparable packages & the monthly cost in US$

USA
250GB space & 2500GB transfer
$9.95

same company...

UK
1.5GB space & 400GB transfer
£4.99 (about $9.00 USD)

Why is there such a HUGE difference in their services?

I'm tempted to host on the .co.uk & just setup the .net to re-direct!!!

Thanks

My personal understanding of this happening could be in the operating costs. The technical infrastructure might be cheaper in the U.S., which is also a bigger market with higher demand for hosting solutions.

EDIT: Even if that comes from the same company - their costs could be higher to offer solutions in the U.K. After all, for a lot of U.K. companies it is important to have a local server, so they won't be choosing to host in the U.S. - so their employees/customers/visitors experience faster connectivity.

Best,

If the company is the on I think you're referring to, they have datacenters in UK and US, where the employee wages and costs are quite different (even if only exchange wise).

Also, one package is advertised and targetted towards the European/World wide market, while the other is devised specifically for efficient competition in the US/Canadian market. Last I cheacked You have to be from the US or Canada to buy that cheaper option.

Even though there is a huge price difference both packages are still quite large.

What are you requirements? Most users will never use the resources that either of those packages allow. So as long as you can pay the 9.00 then get the hosting in the UK if your requirments will fit within the plan.

For better local search result often people recommend to go for co.uk tld, anyway it depends on your preferences.

We actually host a couple clients from the UK (well one will be moving soon) so I don't think the US host is really a problem at the right DC. Infrastructure here is very solid and costs are relatively cheaper so that's the main reason for the price difference.

UK Hosting and pricing are more expensive because data centers get the rip in bandwidth and power.

Floor Space in the UK is nothing. (Which is highly strange since we're such as Tiny Country compared to the US). If you were looking for space for colocation, in Bristol you pay roughly about £1.00/Month per sq.ft

Saying that has a knock on effect with Shared Hosting Companies.

We have also few clients from UK, the price differences seems to be the basic reason that they usually prefer hosting outside UK.

Yes hosting in the UK is (generaly) higher priced here in the UK, and there are very good reasons for that - the discussion has been done to death many many times.

- but 250Gb/2.5Tb for $9.95 - that has to be a joke !

The cost of the bandwidth makes all the difference in the price structure for both the countries so this huge dissimilarity is seen in their services as well.

That must be a joke tbh I mean how can u even offer that.

A lot of the larger companies are offering that now like godaddy, aplus and so on. What they do is they offer that much space, but when one customer starts to use that much space they shuffle that customer around. If the customers loses databases or whatever, they say "sorry for your loss hope you made backups". In a technical sense it's like offering a low end dedicated server for $5.95/m without ssh access of course. Take a look at the sites, you will see them. I actually think those companies took a step in the wrong direction towards drastically overselling. Sure they have money behind them, but money does come and go, theres a lot of major corporations that go bankrupt all the time.

The more I think about it, the more I don't think these hosts will not go bankrupt. If it must come to it, they will just abusively use the clause about overusage of server resources, thus getting rid of the unprofitable customers.

You are more than likely right on this, I know of a few of those companies that I mentioned shuffle the larger customers around and pretty much tell them "sorry if you lost any files, hope you had backups". For the most part though if a customer needs 100 GB of disk space they should just pick up a dedicated server, once you have that much file storage theres to much at stake to leave it on a shared host.

In U.K bandwidth costs are more. If you are a company in U.K, it is advisable to remain hosted in U.K datacenters through a U.K based firm, eventhough price difference plays, but there are far many things which work out to your benefit should you remain hosted with U.K hosting companies.

Apart from faster connectivity, it means easy access should any problem arise. Additionally since both you and hosting provider are bound by U.K rules and laws, it is always beneficial in comparison to getting hosted on US servers where laws may be different and you be unaware of the same.

Again, though US$ seems to dominate the market, GBP pricing is in my opinion bigger, considering wages, expenses and similar.

American web hosts are not more reliable at all. And to be honest I would say many of the US shared web hosts entered an overselling competition. But the prices in US are very low compared to those in UK. one of the reasons of course is the cheap dollar. And I thing that the support that american web hosts provide are a little bit better.

Don't you think, that UK price looks more real then price in the US? Maybe there is something that you really do not need...

You can still find reasonable priced hosting in the UK. The USA will always be cheaper than the UK but you need to think about what you want more, higher reconistion in the UK (if you are a UK company, where all your customers might be) or saving a few quid.

Do some more research ask some people for recommendations, you may find a company who can offer you the same sort of package for a decent price.

Some places offer yearly supscriptions that can work out just as cheap if not cheaper.

Well we market for the US and UK. We using one server based in London, We sent a team of us to Califiona in the USA, to be shocked to find that our service suffered very unnoticeable effects from the distance from the source. but to be effective in the US market, we had to price our services to be competive than our US counter parts. so we have the danger of UK customers going to the US site for cheaper service. which we dont mind, has long has our costs are covered which they have been, I think when we can afford a server in the US we will try to move the US customer over there.
