Top ten webhosting companies

POINT MADE! they PAID to get on the top of the list, so not true top ten list.

But nobody said his website was a Top 10 list.

It has same credibility issues as a Top 10 list, but he doesn't rank/list the companies in a top-list format.

What's wrong with that?? even Google SERP has the same concept, companies who pay $$$ get at the top of SERP highlighted as ADS!

I think the difference is that while Google offers separate space for relevant advertising listings, your listings are part of content. So essentially, it is like Google selling actual top search engine positions.

However, in your defence, your listings are clearly marked as sponsored and highlighted, so it is hard not to confuse them. That does, however, spoil a little bit of trustworthiness factor when regular visitors see some positions are sold. I know you have the score system that operates separately (which is a good thing), except that you really need to bump up the validation practice so that they are actually as reflective of a real world as possible. As I mentioned before, your score system and reviews could all be fake for all I know simply because there is no point of verification.

also on this post he pushed his own site ( self advertising) is it not against forum rules to push/advertise your site/services other than in the marketplace

Yes it is and we are watching this thread carefully. Sometimes comments made, especially with arguments and examples, fall reasonably within the scope of a discussion. It would have been difficult to talk about something without seeing what we are actually talking about.

Maybe that is what it takes to win. Stop worrying about stellar customer service and training as well as the servers and just focus your money on buying advertising and top ten spots.

Seems to be working for the big guys. They are paying heavy fees to get new clients and it is working as they are getting millions of them.

In the past when I would see Top Ten List I avoided them because I saw they were almost always based on referrals to one another. None were or are based on the quality of a host.

Yes and there is no single unified "top 10" list in the world. Everyone [and every list] has different standards and qualities.

The best company is mainly determined by what you need speciifically.

However generally, you need reliable hardware, excellent up-time, and good support (this changes depending on that level of support you need).

There are simply too many different requirements for too many different people to have an overall "top 10" list - every clients' needs are different.

This is a valid point as everyones requirements are different, but i think this thread is really about the top ten sites themselves as to get in a top ten list is depending on how much money you are willing to pay the site owner as to how high up the list you will go

So it should be the "The Top 10 Hosting Companies With Biggest Advertising Budgets" then. ;) However misleading it is to the customers it probably works well, and not just in this industry.

I always look at the price first and for a new website I choose the cheapest package. If the uptime is good and if the resources are not a joke, then for me that hosting service goes into the top 10 list. My top 10, that is :)

If you are focusing on price as the only objective in your search, then you are only setting yourself up for issues in the long-term. Remember that in web hosting, like in anything else, you get what you pay for.

What does resources that are not a joke mean? How much space and bandwidth does an average website need? And what is the difference between one shop offering you 3000 GB of traffic or 5000 GB of traffic? Average websites don't even use 1% of that. You should be looking for a provider providing excellent service in times when you need them, not the one that provides the most resources for the cheapest price.

Most people google "Top 10 Web Hosts" and just get a bunch of lies. Those sites are AFFILIATE WEBSITES that give the highest ranking to the company that pays the most. Worst of all, all of those websites on the lists are owned by one company: EIG.

I do agree with the responses :), there are some companies better than those listed on top 10's but they just don't spend that much to be listed on those top 10's.

I never trust best / top / hot lists. Not only due to the fact that most of such sites are totally affiliated, but mainly because a particular host can't be the best in every possibly way.

Every business has its pros and cons, so due diligence is a must before you buy anything on the net.

The Top 10 list can't be trusted at all. They usually include the companies that pay for it and you should refer to customer testimonials more than these lists.
The web hosting companies that have good reviews in the testimonials and their forums can be trusted and are best in the true sense.

Choose wisely,live well!

:agree: You have a good point, some companies would really pay to have good reviews and land them in the top 10 list. Like you, I would also read more on their forums and would also research more to check whether the list is correct. :)
