The OS for you

When you pick a hosting what type of operating system do you prefer? For myself I like Linux. Its stable and I cant trust Microsoft after the MSBlast virus.. I am getting less faith in that company.

I would always go for linux.
I think it is more stable and quite secure.
I think most servers run linux and there are a lot of god sys admins available for linux whic his a good bonus

Definitely Linux, Windows isn't the best choice for hosting. However, security, in my opinion, depends more on the sysadmin, rather than the OS itself.

Most hosting servers use Linux.
However, I think for desktops Windows 2000 is very good.

I wonder what 2000 server is like for a hosting-server,
anyone?

The OS you choose would depend on what you plan to host.. if you plan to host PHP sites with full PHP support, go with Unix or Linux for sure.. but if you are planning to host ASP sites, obviously choose windows..

The security of the box doesn't matter a whole lot about Nix or Windows.. as stated before, would depend on the box admin who secures it.. you could have a Nix box less secured than a Win box.. or vice versa.. all depends on who secures it and how :)

I would chose either Linux or Mac OS X Server. Both are equally good I think. But windows is not something I would go for.

I have never used a Mac server.
What are they like for performance, stability and compatibility for scripts?
I think there might be a lot of scripts that wouldnt run on Mac but i dont really like much about them

Any good hosting providers should offer their clients a choice. Each system has their own advantage.

I personally prefer to work with a linux based environment such as Redhat or Freebsd.

However most of your hosting users are windows users, and are unaware of raw unix shell commands, which may result in a lot of support phone calls to you company.

The downsides to running a windows server as many of you have stated above... security. Also... there arent any forms of good control panels out for windows yet. I think once you see cPanel/whm available for Windows... you will see a lot more windows servers.

I think I am right in saying that Mac runs all the scripts Linux does. You see Mac OS X is actually Unix just like Linux is.

I run both linux and windows machines... Both of my machines are very secure and fast. People bash microsoft becuase of security issues and the amount of updates that have to be done, but what exactly do you think a KERNAL update is?

Windows can be just as secure as linux, it just depends on how good the person running the machine is :P

As far as doing tasks, I prefer linux. Simple things such as adding dns entries is a one step process in linux, and eaily a 10 step process in windows...

I use windows 2000 server for one of my boxes. Just like any OS, it is only as good as the server admin. If your admin isn't keeping it up to date and monitoring it, eventually you will have issues with it.
