Static IP Addresses

What are Static IP Addresses used for in reselling? Are they important for the customers?
MMhosting.com offers them in their reseller plans but I don't know anything of their functionality.
Thanks.

Most of the hosting providers use virtual hosting, it means that there are multiple sites/domains on a single IP.

There are many resellers on the server and the best option is to set a dedicated ip address for every reseller. It's useful for both provider and reseller. Also providers may offer static ip addresses for SSL purposes (every SSL site requires a dedicated IP, so providers can't host multiple ssl sites on the same ip) or private name servers. See details for their reseller plans, I'm sure you will see something else regarding the IPs.

Static/Dedicated IP addresses allow for a certain amount of anonymity. It makes the reseller look more indendant of a host.

As Alex mentioned they are also necessary if you plan to have a SSL certificate installed on your site.

How so? The IP netblock owner is still belongs to the hosting company, not the reseller since the IP address can't be re-delegated (SWIP) to the reseller.

There really isn't any anonymity to assigning an IP address since anyone with a dnsstuff.com account or even SSH shell account can run a WHOIS on the IP address and quickly determine the parent company.

Of course, the hosting company can take measures to change the IP block ownership to something other than their name but it still doesn't belong to the reseller.

Having the rDNS enabled for the ip can in some way avoid the non-anomality shown up.

Basically, if you want your domain to be hosted on an ip different from our shared hosts and SSL needs to be enabled, the statis ip is something which should be used. if you are on a shared ip, the SSL for your domain accessed as https://domainname.com/ would show the SSL of the domain hosted as the first domain on that shared ip.

There are multiple uses for having a static IP address that are very beneficial for users. As others have noted, you need one when you want SSL, when you want to create custom name servers, for linking purposes avoiding penalities on the same IP C Classes blocks, blacklists, etc.

As hzSari has stated, you can accomplish this with a static IP by using rDNS for anonymity. This does depend on the reseller web hosting provider if they do this or not and would recommend checking with them.

Most hosts do setup rDNS as per the customers wish, if they have a static ip purchased, you need to just email your host for the same.

MMhosting.com is one of those companies which reselling is full-featured and all-inclusive with in-house support.
Plus you may use discounts too.

As mentioned dedicated IP's are mainly meant for SSL installations and also to place domains on IPs. Your Host will gladly do this for you.

Without static address how you can host a server? The server is identified only with the static ip address in the internet, some clients prefer individual ips for their sites to enable full control over various factors such as mailing, dns etc

Those sending mail from their domain name will benefit from a dedicated IP. A shared IP can easily be blacklisted for sending spam if just one of the clients sharing it sends something spammy.

On a dedicated IP you don't have to worry about someone else's mistake resulting in *your* email being rejected.

True, But

while they give you a dedicated IP for your website that sometimes is not the case for mail as the default for cpanel lets say is the server IP for mail - so the persons with a dedicated IP might still be sending out mail from the shared IP< thus the potential of getting blacklisted is still there

Even if you get a dedicated IP, that could have previously been blacklisted, so it's not a cure. IMO I'd just assume getting a dedicated IP, they're so cheap through "a good host" that it doesn't hurt to have one.

You're right. Dedicated IPs can be blacklisted, but there are remedies to get unlisted. Is it time consuming and a real pain - yes.

Yes, it is definitely possible that your Dedicated IP's will get Blacklisted. However, IP's get Blacklisted if you use them for Illegal activities or some other activities which are not allowed. Hence, it is suggested that you should use the IP's for genuine reasons and make correct use of those IP's.

This doesn't mean you are the one who got them blacklisted in the first place. As Steve said, it's a real pain to get them unlisted. I don't even bother trying.. Next IP please!

Correct, if you are using a Shared IP address, it might be possible that the IP is Blacklisted due to someone who is using the same IP address. Hence, it is always better to consider a Dedicated IP address for your website. And yes, it is definitely very difficult to get an IP address out of the Blacklist.
