Starting a small hosting business: web hosting/VPS or game server hosting?

Hi everyone!
I'm planning to launch a small hosting company, but I've been undecided for a while about which direction to take. I imagine many of you here have been in this industry for quite some time, so I'd love to hear your thoughts. I know the hosting market is very crowded, but this is something I've wanted to do for a few years now, and I'd like to ask which direction you think would be the better fit for getting started:
  1. Focusing on web hosting, domains, and a few VPS plans?
  2. Focusing on game server hosting?
I'm curious to hear your opinions. Thanks a lot for taking the time to read and reply to my post!

Before diving into that, consider the current market and the technical skills you have. If you have better technical skills in game server hosting and know the market, it will be better and become a plus point.

I'd start with the people you can actually reach. If you know local businesses that need websites, web hosting gives you an obvious way in. If you're part of a gaming community, maybe pick one game and start there. Try to get a few people interested in a specific offer before you spend on infrastructure, and keep the range small enough that you can handle support yourself.

When choosing a host for your business be sure that check these features out: security features included in hosting packages, such as malware scanning, firewalls, and DDoS protection. Good luck!

Hello and welcome to Hosting Discussion!

Before you start up a business, you need to understand the market you're looking to serve. Typically small businesses are built out of need, so you're either building web sites for people you know or you hear they're having some technical problem with their current host, unsatisfied with pricing, etc.

Has any of that occurred yet?

I’d start with VPS/web hosting rather than game servers unless you already have a strong gaming community to target.
Web hosting gives you more room to test different services and customer segments, while game hosting can be more niche and support-heavy.
Either way, I’d start small and focus on one specific audience instead of trying to compete with every major host.

If you are just starting, I would suggest web hosting, domains, and a few VPS plans rather than focusing only on game servers. It gives you a vast customer base and lets you offer different services as you grow.

Game hosting can be profitable, but it usually needs specialized infrastructure, strong DDoS protection, and good technical support. I would start with general hosting, build a customer base, and add game hosting later if there is sufficient demand.

As many of others have mentioned, PLEASE consider the current market, consider security, consider your business plan: what exactly are you trying to achieve? What is it you are doing differently?
I'd firstly recommend web hosting and domain registration - then scale up to VPS plans, then dedicated servers, and THEN consider game hosting.
Wish you best of luck in your journey! No matter what you choose, myself (and others here) are willing to be your helping hand.

Hello,

Before jumping into a full-scale business, you can try becoming a reseller. This will help you understand how the business works and even build a customer base. However, keep in mind that everything depends on your skills, readiness to work 24/7, and overall dedication.

Personally, I think you should consider which area you’re better at and which one you’d be more likely to stick with when things get tough. That’s a crucial factor.

I’d start with a small reseller hosting service aimed at a specific customer group, then expand once you know what they need. Game hosting makes more sense if you already understand the games and have a community to sell to.

InterServer is worth comparing for infrastructure: its entry VPS lists 1 CPU core, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD and 2 TB transfer for $3/month. Budget separately for control-panel licensing, backups and administration.

Before posting: I couldn’t verify the $1 DirectAdmin renewal offer or JV-20-LIFE lifetime terms. Also, confirm reseller permission - a standard shared-hosting plan shouldn’t be assumed suitable for selling hosting to customers.
