SSH for Shared?

I would never offer SSH on any plans -- shared or reseller. Anything they want installed can go through me and my techs. :) That's my take on it

Providing SSH could inflict a lot of troubles to a web host if the service is given to anyone. So it is really better when a host gives SSH to "proven customers".

I agree. From my experience, people are using SSH for hacking purposes mainly. I suppose there are SOME individuals who feel more comfortable using command line for administering, but anyone can learn the point-and-click interfaces of Plesk, Cpanel, etc.. and those provide all the functionality that hosts offer anyways.

Like many who have already posted, I don't offer SSH by default, on any package, but allow clients to request it with valid justification but then I will only give it to customers that I feel I can 100% trust.

I use SSH quite a bit anyway to manage the hosting and just my PC so, I can see why some people may require it.

If i offered hosting, I personally would NOT offer SSH the risks are just to great not only can it comprimse your hosting quality but your clients sites.

just not worth it, imo

Offer SSH Shell for shared? haha.... just say good bye to everything. Its like giving away your root password or somthing like that. I would never think about offering it.

We do not allow our clients to have shell/SSH access on any of our shared servers. There are no exceptions for any reason. Shell/SSH is just not appropriate for a shared server.

This policy is in place because:

1) It is better for security.

2) It is better for stability.

3) It gives all other customers on the shared server peace to know that nobody else on their shared server has shell/ssh.

Better to look for VPS Plan or Dedicated Server for SSH access.

why would someone want ssh access on a shared environment?

It makes some operations easier, like handling .tar files, finding some files, finding specif text within a file, and you can use a lot of useful *nix commands if you know how to do it.

I feel that ssh for shared accounts is quite dangerous. Enabling this feature will cause a number of problems if your server is not secured properly. I know that dreamhost currently provides a secured version of ssh for there shared hosting accounts via there custom control panel. Something similar to a jail shell would be best if your going to enable ssh.

We do not offer SSH to shared clients. If a customer really wants it, I have always recommended superuser.net. They offer SSH and have been around for years.

I agree with AlexF. Most companies do not prefer to give SSH access as it is a critical security issue and really not worth risking leaving it open.

After all, why would a shared customer need SSH access. He/she can do almost everything using the control panel. If there is a specific task that cannot be done through control panel he can request it from server admin as well.

We don't offer ssh or give it to anyone if they need something installed in ssh we do it for them after we have approved what is being installed.
