I think we should have a national 'No Computer Day' one day every year all computers are turned off.... and we talk to each other instead !

Sure why not.
The withdraw will be the hardest part. I have done it before though.
I should ask does this no computer day include smart phones?

As long as its a day when i am not out trading ( stall at fairs) as i use my Blackberry Playbook as a Credit Card terminal.

Some grocery stores could still function as some still have the old none computer cash machines. But they would not be able to take credit cards only checks and cash.

but with no ATM or bank teller service how could you pay with cash, in the UK most stores no longer accept cheques.

also no computers means no fuel for vehicles as pumps are computer operated now. no subway etc.

I keep cash on hand but not much. So I could still go to the store that is local here.

You are right about the gas. Although that is only been the case here in the past few years. The old gas station had old pumps that you had to pay inside and they would turn on the pumps and then you get your gas.

I had to get a debit card when they got the new pumps. As you pay at the pump now. I have since gotten credit cards so I can use them as well. But for 5 years I had no credit cards or debit cards and used cash for every thing. Online it was all paypal. I only got credit cards recently, around 2 years ago.

I often have days of no technology, and sometimes it's an entire weeked or 3 days of no technology (except for lights).

Regular breaks from the computer world to deal with the real world is something that everyone should do. Whether it means going camping, hunting, fishing or just being outdoors - those breaks from computers are a huge energy recharger!

As for devoting an entire day - people should be doing this regularly anyway - if they're not, they're missing out on life.

One thing that I require (yes, I said REQUIRE), is that when I go out to dinner etc, or even having dinner at home, phones are not allowed at the table - whoever it is can wait. There's no need to check a facebook status, or upload a picture of your food to facebook at that exact moment. Feel like sharing, not a problem, take a picture, then upload it later - believe me, the world can wait the 45 minutes! :)

It is like in "Matrix" there are people don't want to be unplugged. I remember when I was 16 years old was no computer and all the summer holiday we were outside playing soccer, phishing (not banking :) ) and everybody was relax, the world was different, believe me everybody were happy. Nice time......

same here, i remember xmas day and all the kids on their new bikes, now even during school hols. its like a ghost town, all kids indoor on the latest Xbox or whatever is in fashion now. And when you do see the odd kid out and about their fingers are permanently fixed to smartphone keypads.

Where has the art of conversation gone?

No computer means NOTHING will work - it's not a plausable scenario.

This means, no cars (most of them have computer chips), no airplanes, no banks, tv, radio, emergency response units, telephone, hot meals in a kitchen, hospitals, emergency rooms, pace makers, hearing aides, etc etc.

While it's a nice THOUGHT - it's not a realistic thought. I'd much prefer people use their own free-will and their own brain and learn to take a break and enjoy nature (which usually means having to look things up on your GPS phone, getting in a car and taking a trip).

I used to spend several hours a day with my horses - a nice break from computers.

true its not realistic, but i think some sort of computer restrictions would be great for teenagers as these days their fingers always seem glued to cell phone keypads as they constantly text each other, even if they are feet away from who they are texting, or they are posting utter rubbish on facebook or twitter.

It reminds me of my favorite episode of Seaquest in which they traveled to the future to find only 2 humans remain. Humanity lost the ability to interact physically which reduced the population down to almost nothing.
