Shared vs VPS

Currently i have a shared package of 10,000MB space and 100,000MB bandwidth.

This is being used by 3 sites

The main site is small just for a dog breeders site

the other 2 are subdomains of these with the domain names pointing to the subdomains.

I am currently using about 45 to 50% of space but under 30 % of the bandwidth

the vast majority of this is being used by an e107 based forum type site with almost 1000 members

the 3rd site is to be lauched quite soon and is another e107 based forum that will hopefully but quite likely reach the same size in members and info as the other, in fact i suspect more. So likely to then use all space but doubt the bandwidth.

I receive donations for the current forum of approx $50 per month and believe i will be able to reach the same figures with the new forum once lauched.

My current shared hosting package costs $99 per year and they can provide Vps packages of

General Features
MVS Basic 40,000Mb space and 400,000Mb traffic for $660 per year

MVS Deluxe 80,000Mb space and 800,000Mb traffic for $996 per year

the server processors for vps are Intel Pentium 4 - 2.8GHz but i am unsure of Ram

any advice is much appreciated as to suggestions which to choose or to do.

BTW this is with 123ehost.com who i have been using now for 2.5 years and have been exceptionally happy until recently when page loads have become very slow which is tedious for me but i am sure also for users.

Could you please provide more specs of the VPS packages? Also, for those prices I assume they are managed, correct?

It doesn't really look to me like they are offering you a VPS, it looks more like a "premium" shared hosting plan. At that price, you can get a fully managed Virtuozzo VPS package.

However, it doesn't really sound to me like you have outgrown your shared hosting package, it sounds more like 123ehost's service is declining. You may wish to consider switching to a different shared hosting provider that can maintain the fast page load speeds for you.

Yes, I think they're not VPS, but more of a Semi-Dedicated.

Semi dedicated is basically means less users on a single server -- which in turns, there would be more resources (CPU/RAM) available for each users.

I agree you've possibly outgrown your shared hosting, but since you've been with them for 2.5 years and you're happy, why not just try the MVS with them for say, a month and two and see how it goes?

Take a look at the details that they give at the bottom of the page about their "Managed Virtual Servers", not very high end machines - especially with only 2GB RAM. If you are going to pay that much for a regular shared hosting package, you should be on a higher end server at least. I stick with my advise of either getting a real managed virtuozzo VPS at that price or look into getting a reliable hosting package elsewhere in order to resolve your page load issue.

It seems that they are not VPS.Would you please give brief description of the packages you have offered. Are they semi dedicated, also mention.

When it comes to general comparison, my answer is "yes" to VPS and "no" to Shared Hosting, especially when it comes to websites and projects that shall be developed in isolated environment by default.

Thanks guys for the replies so far.

I have had an excellent experience with my current provider. I started off clueless to most things website orientated and when i made mistakes at the start they helped me to correct them. When i messed up a software update and had not done a backup prior to it they fixed it all back up for me very quickly and at no added cost.

BUT the speed at certain times especially busy periods has been iritating to me and i know some members have stopped posting photos in the galleries due to it taking so long to upload them.
This in itself has been having an effect on the bandwidth usage because i think people are tired waiting so go to my competitors site instead.

To cover my current space and what future space i will need with my current forum and gallery and also to allow for the required space that i expect my new forum and gallery to need when it is launched i would think that i need at least 10Gb of space as a minimum. With the option to upgrade to possibly 15 or 20Gb as required.

Having checked traffic and possible expectations i would predict that i will need approx 60Gb minimum per month.

The current site is getting the majority of traffic from USA and this new site is to be a UK based one.

At the moment my speed and page load issues (10 seconds and more at times)are an issue on my site when the USA are awake LOL. Probably because in the UK connection speeds are so much slower.

I have asked my current host for info on the servers and they replied this The server are run on linux, most regular servers run on 2gigs of ram and are on dual core. I read on their site they use 2.8Ghz CPU and i assume this is for all servers as the email reply suggested all servers are the same spec.

I am open to any suggestions as to what is best to do, companies or hosts to look at, although i have only ever used shared hosting until now.

Thanks in advance

phil

Hi Phil,

What sort of budget do you have? Perhaps maybe two shared hosting packages would be best for you (one in the US and one in the UK)? Although not advertised, many US providers do have a few servers in the UK available upon request.

As far as your host's server specs, it sounds to me like the reason your pages are starting to go slow is because the server is a lot more full now than when you first joined with him and the 2GB of RAM simply isn't cutting it. I'd say it's definitely time to move on.

Did your website experience a recent surge in traffic? If not, the slowness is unlikely to have something to do with your website, and quite likely to do with the server's capacity and how the server is managed.

It doesn't sound to me like you're having an impossibly high usage level. I'd try another shared hosting provider before going the VPS route.

Hi ,
I also use 123ehost.com's semi-dedicated server, I run a private blog site. My main concern is uptime and security and I never had any issues and their respond time is instant.

Thanks guys

johnny i have found the exact same with uptime and response time which was very beneficial when my only competitors site was down 3 times over the past 18 months for about a week at a time and one instance 3 weeks.

Sean i could probably justify up to $1000 after i get Xmas out of the way especially when the new site takes off as it should make more in advertising than the current which is donations of about $600 per year.

Dan TBH if anything my site has been getting less traffic over the past few months due to the speed issues and I have been told that is virtually impossible to upload photos into the photo gallery and the 2 largest forums inside the forum area are very slow to open up.

I would notice like on Sunday night/ monday morning about 2am that the site was alot faster than anytime during the week.

Thanks Steve

However i do not understand what the Robtex info is really.

But it appears they do not have many servers?

Thanks guys

Well has anyone any suggestions as to other VPS

i was looking at Servint and they have a package

45 GB Disk Space
1.5 TB Monthly Transfer
1.5 GB Guaranteed (3 GB Burst RAM)

CentOS 5 Operating System
4 IP Addresses
Unlimited Domains and User Accounts
FREE Virtuozzo Power Panel
FREE nightly backups
FREE cPanel, Plesk, or Parallels Small Business Panel Available
No set-up fee

Minimum server specs
for all ServInt VPS products

* Dual Quad Core Intel Xeon L5300/L5400 Series CPUs
* 32 GB 667 MHz DDR2 Dual Rank, Fully Buffered RAM
* 15K RPM SCSI/SAS Hard Drives in RAID 10
* Zero Downtime During Drive Failure
* Hot-Swap Drives and Fans
* Replaceable on the Fly
* Dual Gigabit Network Interfaces

The cost is $921.15 for the year and they will move my sites over for me

Plus it gives me the opportunity to make further sites for myself and for other people of which i have 2 ready waiting me to make sites for them and another that wants me to make a forum type site for them. And get revenue from that also.

Or are there other companies that you guys think are better?

Thanks in advance

Phil

Phil,
I've been paying $320 a year for my business server. I also have other hosted accounts with other companies but the support response time does not even get close to 123ehost.com, therefore I have kept the main site with 123ehost.com and the other ones are with godaddy. you should check with the company if they have live support phone number and live chat on their site before making your decision.
