Server Backups in Theory?

Hello,

This combination approach helps keep computer users safe by protecting their systems from spyware and malware threats, while providing the ultimate protection of a full system restore in the event that front line security fails. The Acronis Backup and Security 2010 product includes three licenses, as well as 5GB of secure online storage. The Acronis system starts with a very comprehensive backup product and builds a security suite into the mix.

I never had a host that was showed a good responsibility about my backups. I requested a few times my old files to be restored and just once they did it but the backup was too old, which means they do less frequent backups than they claim. How important are server backups... from your experience?

Backups are just as important as the server itself.

If you don't have frequent reliable backups, the time will come where you find yourself in a mood resembling :crash:.

I can't tell you how many clients in the last 5 years (all at past jobs) have called me asking for an update on their server and I tell them their HDD is so dead the BIOS doesn't even recognize it. And then the inevitable crying and begging for me to do something about it starts.

It's honestly awful for me to deal with that. I hate giving people bad news, I much rather say :D:thumbup:.

Backups are the most important thing when it come to hosting. Think of it like this backups are your companies proof of existance. It is like your passport to prove that information was there and if it is lost how can you prove it was ever there?

That is my 2 cents. I would put backups at the top of the list when finding a hosting company.

From my experience backups are very important. Having always ready daily or at least weekly backup is very helpful and might and propably will save your life in certain circumstances. I would recommend paying attention about backups.

As csn-uk said, you not only rely on the hosting what it said, but also you should make multiple backups of your data yourself. Additionly,it is very important to learn about the TOS of the hosting before you choose it

Despite of the promise of hosting provider, you should also make backups of the important data, that will be reliable.

equipment could actually work as it should for more than one day... NOPE!

Wow! A sore subject with me!

Sorry, I never would have believed we would have to make routine backups daily. Ge-whiz, wouldn't you think that a laptop, or desktop or any other piece of equipment could actually work as it should for more than one day... NOPE!

In 1984 while I was working in a computer store as a VAR I started in the area of Apple and Macintosh computers. Then came the IBM (thanks Bill) and then the clone wars... all great pieces of junk, and yet still today we are still using that same piece of junk that IMB/Bill Gates made BILLIONS from.... and still every other day or so, our computer, laptop or other Hi-Tech piece of junk decides for no apparent reason, or maybe with a little help from Microsoft's system's update our computers equipment just up and dies a fast death.

I resisted for years (in denial I guess) not to believe or succumb to its demands of reinstalling the operating system and all the applications over-and-over again!

Ain't we havin' fun now!

Backups are very important. From my end of things, I like to have backups because it solves a lot of my headaches. Sure, I like backups for my customers too, but I do it primarily for my own benefit, which happens to benefit them as well.

No matter who your provider is or what they promise ... Always maintain your own off-provider backups if your site and it's data is important to you. If a major issue arises where you need a backup restored and your provider doesn't have a copy of it... You'll be glad you took the time and made the effort.

I hate how no hosting company gets blamed for anything. It is always the customer who suffers if something goes wrong. I know a few times when my host's support lied to me but who am I to question them?

If hosting companies hosting you at $5/month were LIABLE for loss of data, and they'd have to reimburse customers for loss of websites, files, accounting stuff, documents, business, etc... One catastrophic failure/natural disaster and they're out of business. Most people don't change their websites often and cPanel makes it to generate and download a backup, which should be done regularly by the client.

Now they claim to do backups regularly but can't provide. That's bad.

But responsability for loss of data... they'd need to charge a lot more and deal with the mess of actually KNOWING the value of what is lost. Because anyone can pretty much arbitrarily claim it was a $XXX XXX business for a $X XXX. After all, content is LOST and businesses usually have offline activities. What and what did not come from online sales and what value had the whole online system?

Basic security like RAID configured hard drives and are a must. Reduces chances of failures by a lot. Less complaining.

But I don't think you can held a hosting company liable for just about EVERYTHING.

Just liable for what they claim to provide but are actually not. They usually make this clear and you should protest in case it's not provided and/or change provider.

Normally host back up your files daily, but only keep 3 files, 1 is for yesterday, 1 is for a week ago, another for 1 month ago.

There are some solutions for your case, R1soft and some other software will only backup modified files, so it is possible to restore your website to any day within last 7 days even 30 days.

I guess my corporate IT background gets the best of me... I keep 7 full days and then last one of the week and then last one of the month.

Sure its a lot to store and manage but drives are cheap and software automates 99% of the work... The rest comes down to bandwidth as the backups are stored in 2 different remote locations.

Also keep in mind that you should be at least spot checking your backups to make sure they are valid. Nothing sucks like thinking you have good backups then something happens and your backups are corrupt..
