Hey folks,

Ok.. well... my laptop I think is packing in on me. It no longer loads when it's cold, and will only start up at lunch time when it gets to about 20 degrees celcius, maybe it just doesn't like the cold or likes sleeping late, heh, but I have the feeling it's going to pack in any moment (Reason why I'm busy backing up everything in both Windows and Linux).

Now, I've been looking at new PCs for a while, and have had my eye on a Medion one. The reason being my laptop is Medion (but it's very very old), and they are unbeatable when you compare the specs and price.

Currently at Carrefour, they've on sale:

MEDION MD 5291
Intel Pentium 4 - 530 (3.0 GHz) with HT Technology (1mb cache, etc.)
1x 200gb SATA hard drive, 7200/rpm
1GB DDR RAM (No idea about the max, but I think it is 1gb)
Floppy Drive (3.5")
6 in 1 Card Reader (Internal)
128mb nVidia GeForce PCX 5300 PCI Express (TV-Out)
DVD ROM drive
DVD RW drive
6x USB2
2x FireWire
1x Serial
1x Parallel
2x PS/2
1x Microphone
1x Headphone
PCI 56K V.90 Modem
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (I'll do triple booth with it and two other Linux's though)
Works 7.0
Nero 6
Home cinema suite
Antivirus
Mouse
Keyboard
TV Remote

Probably more, but cannot think at the mo.
It's only 999 Euro, on promotion, and I can have finance on it. Which is a big factor for me. My only problem is the graphics card. Firstly it's nVidia, never had them before so don't know them, and secondly I've no idea if it's a good one. It's: 128mb nVidia GeForce PCX 5300 PCI Express (TV-Out)
For those who want, here's more info on the Medion MD5291.

What I did want is apparently no longer available in France, the Medion Titanium MD8083. It was very good, practically the same, but had an 8 in 1 card reader, ATI Radeon 9800 XL graphics card (9800 Pro overclocked), 160gb hard drive, and can't really think anything much else different. Read more on it here.

I'd buy the MD5291, but don't know how good the graphics card is.

Medion also have a MD1873 available, don't think at Carrefour though. But it's

Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
AMD Athlon# XP 3200+ / 400 MHz FSB
160 GB hard disk drive 7200 rpm
512 MB DDR-RAM (333 MHz)
Pioneer DVD-writer 4x DVD+R / 2,4x DVD+RW / 4x DVD-R / 2x DVD-RW / 16x CD-R / 10x CD-RW
16x DVD-ROM
Floppy disk drive
Medion® Geforce# FX 5200 / 128MB DDR RAM
Internal PCI Creatix 56K V.9x DSP Data Fax Modem
Medion® 7134 TV-Tuner card
10/100MB LAN on board
Sound card: Realtek AC'97 audio
Speakers: Labtec® LCS®-1050 (Spin 50)
Wired mouse (2 buttons, wheel) incl. mouse pad PS2.
Chicony PS2 wired multimedia keyboard
Case: Midi Tower

...with other stuff

So, I've no idea. I don't like a lot of the things on the MD1873.

So, should I get the MD5291, or try and get a hold of the Titanium MD808? (but it'll have an ATI Radeon 9800 XXL, 200gb hdd, etc. etc. - I don't know the model number, but afaik it's only avail. in Germany but it's better than the 8083..)

So, long post, lots of confusing things, heh, so what should I do?

Thanks :)

Ok thanks, well my main worry about the MD5291 is the graphics card. How does it compare with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro? The Titanium MD8083 has an ATI Radeon 9800 XL which is a 9800 Pro overclocked, and I think the XXL is the 9800 Pro All-In-Wonder or something like that.

Normally I would worry about it, heh, but if I'm going to purchase a new computer I might as well get something half decent.
