Most people saying that they are graphic or web designers..

Ahh, the best school is the school of life. Colledge is nice and if you can afford it but should not hold anybody back and in many times if you have the skill then it really does not matter. Employers know this.

To be fair some have talent but employers tend towards certs - and HR dept's tend toward the most advanced (not proving anything) certification.

I've always wondered how an HR chap/chappet can make a tech decision ?? Without the knowledge they hold so dear.

They fall back on the paper and on who presents the best appearance. Which is kind of how I pick football teams...so that tells you how reliable a method -=that=- is.

In some cases, they'll ask the hiring manager who they think is the most qualified candidate. If the hiring manager is likewise clueless, they may seek an opinion from someone from their company's IT staff.

In the UK the graphic design degree that I got at college then university taught me all the practical knowledge where printing is concerned. It was like a small course on 'hands-on' printing and also photography.

The idea being that by the end of the course that we all knew about the processes that others linked to us did and we could make it easier for them.

I'm not saying that all graduate designers are good cos they aren't but not all designers with lots of experience are good.

You can have no experience and a degree and be an ok designer. You can also have 10 years experience and be an ok designer.

It's all down to the individual.

Can I ask why you never got a degree?

The problem I have is that employers over here wont even consider taking you on untill you've got at least three years experience.

If you don't they wont even look at the quality of your work.

That sucks!

A lot of employers go through recruitment agencies and if you're short of experience the recruitment agency says no and the employer never sees your work.

Its also the same for people that dont have a degree of the required qualification but they could be better than anyone with the required qualification ;)

Couldnt you say that you have experience from doing work on the net and just show examples of work you have done on your website?
It is experience and if you have been doing a degree Im sureyou would have work you done in the last 3 years.

I've begun seeing the qualification for the job listing a 4 year degree OR relevant experience but in my case, the experience is not quantifiable in that a lot of it was done freelance so unless I'm prepared to carry around a large portfolio and a disk wtih all the saved work, sites, etc which most employers just don't want to sift through, then were back to the same equation: Degree = credibility.

Add to that the abysmal job market where employers get hundreds of resumes per each job listed and you have very little chance to prove yourself unless you get very lucky.

Hell, I just got beat out for a great job because the employer decided that he'd hire a friend from out of state and move him here as the friend needed work. He's lesss qualified and has the above mentioned expenses but that's the way things are at this point.

Yeah its getting very hard to get work related to the IT industry I think.
Once you get in, if your with a good company, it can really set you up for life, the experience working with a company will put you ahead of a lot of people.

Most places do ask for experience and a qualification, getting that first bit of experience to start you off is pretty hard I think.
You cant get a job because you dont have the experience, but then you cant get the experience needed

its a tough world hehe
