They could well have been called a different name in 1993.

They havent been webhosting since 1993 then have they...

Don't see how that means they haven't been webhosting since 1993
If they had a different name when they started out, they could have also been under a different domain, yet still offering the same services.
Many companies have changed their domain and name yet kept everything else the same.
Looking up the whois of a domain really doesn't tell you how long a company has been in business.

ZDNet owned the site since 2002 untill 2003. They didnt do webhosting on it.
So no, they didnt exist in 1993, and even the link on their site shows archive.org as 1997 december 28th to be exact.
Network solutions showed them as registering the domain name on January 7th 1998 so go figure.
Point being they were not here in 1993.
And yes, Network solutions was their registrar.

You are still only referring to the domain as how long they have been in business.
They could have been providing hosting to local businesses and not had their own website (I actually have seen a few hosts saying they do this).
Maybe they were under a different name, then they changed to the current domain by getting it from ZDnet or when it was dropped.

It seems that my host1.com post has created a pretty heated conversation. Yay me!!

I would have to agree with with the other Charlotte Web, domain names do not tell anything about how old the company is. For example....we will use ABC television. Had domains been available when ABC first came out they probably would of used AmericanBroadcastingCompany.com since abbreviations were not that popular back in the 60's. But as times change they would of become known as just ABC and probably bought ABC.com. The domain name would of been bought lets say in 1990. However the company isnt as old as the domain name.... they were known as something else at that time, or maybe even a different name all together. Domain name registration information is only good for one thing.... seeing when the domain expires, and who to contact if you have any questions regarding that domain. Anything else as far as judgement is bullshit. If you really want to know how old a company is, simply ask to see their business license then lookup the business ID with a local governemnt branch.

who ever the first ISP was would truly be the first web host :). But the longest would be either IBM, MicroSoft, or possibly Apple when you think about it. The big guys

If I were to guess I would say internic.net as they were the first domain registration service released from the government.

ISP's existed before the World Wide Web. WWW was invented in 1990, and the first graphical browser (NCSA Mosaic) in I believe 1993. But you're right that some ISP's would likely be up there in the early ones although many of those have been bought out.

If you want to get technical, hosting a website and being a commercial webhost (in the sense of selling webhosting services) are two different things. Otherwise, add many major universities to the first webhosters list and CERN as the very first website. I know I was hosting websites and gopher servers in the early 90's at my university.

And whois is not a good way to tell how long a company has been in business (at least as far a maximum time). At best it only tells you how long they have owned that current domain, and the minimum time they have been in business.

I did find an interesting archive of website announcements from 1993 to 1996 at NCSA though that's fun to browse through.

Wow...resurrecting the dead. Not even sure who you are replying about, but technically you don't have to have an official website to provide webhosting (I don't for example, since I don't advertise my webhosting... it's all word-of-mouth and through other client projects).

And if you are asking about the whois information, companies may change their name or their website address, hence whois information only providing a partial picture.

Thanks for your input BigGorilla. You made a good point there.

Sorry for some of the threads being old. We are in a transition phase where a year old database was restored a couple of months back and some older posts from time to time are getting replied to.

I will lock this thread now.

Anybody else, feel free to re open a new thread if you want to discuss this further :)

Thanks again everybody for your input on this.
