Long Domains?

Long domains are great for keyword advertising and driving backlinks. That's about all I use the long domains for these days. The longer the domain, the harder it is to miss-type it. We have a long domain by many standards, but it's been branded so well over the years that it's not even looked at long any more.

I think this is the best reply of them all, or at least the most useful for me. I've read your domain numerous times and never even stopped to think for a second that it was a "long domain".

If you want to start a website with the domain name, I recommend you purchase your

domain and hosting together from one provider. In this way it is possible to get your

domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift when you buy domain name and

hosting package together.

If you do purchase the domain and hosting from a single provider, be sure that the domain is actually in YOUR name and not in the hosts name. Also make sure there's another way to access the domain control panel should your host go out of business and you need to be able to transfer the domain to another provider.

Places like FeaturePrice years ago had a big fiasco in that they shut down their operation overnight and left more than 100,000 people without access to their domains. What a mess!

Even though we sell both, I highly recommend separating your domain name vendor from your hosting provider. Like Conor said, too many have been burned, not able to move domains to new providers because of issues on the hosting side.

If you can't get .com then don't worry. Other extensions .net, .org are equally valuable. It all depends on how you wanna use the site. Focus on creating quality and meaningful content; in a long run the extension does not really matter the most. Visitors like quality sites, they don't care if it is .com, .net, or .org. Well, that's my opinion; even though I know .com is the most preferred.
Also, if you can stay away from buying domain names that are too long., it's better. It's hard to get type-in traffic with those names.

Who cares about the length of the domain if it contains your targeted keywords. But I do agree that hyphening the domain name can look somewhat spammy.

Long domains are very hard to remember, people generally remember names that make some meaning and they have to remember many domains. Domain name is general should be short and meaningful. If you want a long domain name, the domain name such as longdomainname. com should be preferred , such that it is easy to remember.

I think all the good short ones are gone too. At least the .com ones are. As long as you can think of a catchy domain name I think its fine.

In my opinion, I don’t think it will have a negative impact. If a visitor likes your content they will save your site for their records, or make a note of it. Although, when I do choose to go for long domains, I try to make them a full keyword name.

Short domain names

I prefer shorter domain names as it is easy to remember and people can easily type and remember. Longer domain names ofter confuses people. I would personally recommended shorter domain name.

I think it depends on how you're defining long/short. I think if you have something that is easy to remember, a long domain name is fine. If your name has lots of / and numbers though, it's not going to be easy for your customers to remember it. That goes for short names too.

What about long domains that make NO sense, like 57freecreditreport.com or 123makebigmoneyonline.com? I see names like these on infocommercials and wonder why?

If it's something creative indicative or the same as the name of your business that people will remember, then I do not think it's that big of an issue.

Is something like the following within reason for you?

web-hosting-reviews-for-hostgator-and-dreamhost (dot) com

Defiantly will never visit something like this.

And frankly speaking I do not care about the length. I mean I use either Bookmarks or Ctrl+C -> Ctrl+V. Plus Google always comes in handy if i don't remember the domain name by looking things up for me when i type in the address bar of the Firefox (heh - yeah the best browser ever!)
However customers may have different opinion.

And I actually like the Idea of getting both the long domain (if you need to of course) and the short abbreviation.

Long domains are hard to remember and are easily forgotten, that is if you forget to bookmark the website that you browsed a few days ago. Besides, the hyphens look annoying on the URL browser on my own view. I'd rather go for shorter domains that can be easily remembered and they also get the most traffic from SEO.

I think you are better off with a shorter domain name, if you can think of one that still describes your site well, but is alot easier to remember and read. If you decide to go with a long one, using hyphens is a good idea, as some search engines identify the keywords easier.
