What is wrong with adding google adsense to your hosting site, i was told its wrong because i have them on my site, though its a way of also allowing clients to contest and contrast prices and services with other hosting adverts they may view through my site, but dont thing it stops customers from buying from you, what's your thought on this ?

I would never even consider hosting with a site that uses google adsense.
It is unprofessional and makes the host, or any other serious business, look desperate and amateur.

The idea I think would be: you run a business and you should mainly make money from your business ( from hosting in this example - not for adsesne ).
Also look at major hosting providers: no external ads. ( generally speaking )
However there is no problem in placing adsense on your site if you like.

I never have. Do they use adsense?
They display sponsored links on product pages. This is a company with a market cap of $89 billion.

Here is Amazon's explanation.

Amazon.com said:
Generating additional revenue from sponsored links allows Amazon.com to offer lower prices to you - something we are dedicated to doing in every way we can.

Personally, I don't think it belongs on a business site. I actually just had a meeting with a client the other day for SEO work and they had Google Adwords on their site. They were pretty much posting links directly to their competition and getting $0.10 a click or something minimal. They sold software that retails at $5k per seat and many companies need 5-50 seats.

While I can understand the desire to make extra money, I don't believe it has a place on their site. On a blog? Not a problem. On a brochure type site? Not really professional. They may as well have had 4 flashing 468x60 banners and blink text on their site.

Some online stores can get away with it, but for the majority of sites, especially hosting companies, I think it would be a very bad idea. Think of it this way - have you ever walked into a store, ad within the first 5 feet you're given a flyer and told to leave the store that another place has the same item for cheaper? It's just like that - it's simply not, and shouldn't be done.

Amazon is a different beast, but for the most part their links all point to other parts of their site. I was just on the site right now looking for where they post Adsense information, but I couldn't find it. Anyone want to post a clue to where it's located, or have they integrated it that well that you can't tell it's an advertisement?

I'd keep it off a hosting site personally. Like others have said, it makes you look desperate and unprofessional.

Adsense is bad idea for a business site because you can't precisely control who puts the ad on your site, and you generally end up advertising your direct competitors. However, a hosting company could partner up with an SEO, web design company etc. (preferably one that it can vouch for), and place their ads in appropriate places on the site. I see nothing wrong with that.

AdSense is a service for publishers, not for service providers. Why should you feature someone else on your website and to distract attention of your website visitors?

Steve has the right approach. Use it on your feeder sites, but not the main site. Very different ballgame when you put it on your main page.

On business web sites, I guess it is not a good idea to use adsense. They should be used only when you have a free project like blog.

It would be very un-professional, I am not sure it would be wise if you are serious, ads are more in use to free services or for and within blogs and or forums.

For a business, not so much.

Having adsence on a hosting site IMO cries desperate kiddy host.

If you want to display hosting related adsense ads create a minisite / blog based on hosting.

i think this is bad idea using adsense on hosting site make your hosting site blog place adsense ads on blog

Exactly, hosting site should be only for business so you market your plans and services in a better way.

Adsense should be used on blogs.

I'm going to have to agree with the general direction of this thread. Using adsense makes your page revenue driven. Since hosting sites are already revenue driven, most of them being "Call To Action" based marketing (for example, "Sign up Now!"), I can't see the benefit of using adsense on your hosting site itself.

Keep in mind that, for the most part, we're targeting a knowledgeable market audience. The majority of viewers and potential customers visiting your hosting site have a better sense of awareness and understanding of the product you are selling than your average web wanderer. The IT guys that visit your site looking for hosting know exactly what adsense is and what your objective is when using it.

Last but not least, encouraging customers to head to other sites when you'd rather have them focusing on what they have already stumbled upon with your site deters a sale.

Have a good day,
Dan Lee
