Information Needed on Web Hosting

Friends,

Before I contact any hosting services provider I want to know about some of basic information like, what is domain parking? What is virtual web hosting? How do I pay for web hosting?

Thanks,

Payments are going to depend on the hosting company themselves. Some hosts allow payment by credit card, others only allow payment through PayPal, and others only through 2checkout or via check etc. This is specific to the hosting company that you're looking to go with.

As for what are the various things, here's a quick rundown;

domain name - your website domain
Add-On Domain - extra domains that operate under your website. They're seperate but have the same login info
Parked Domain - a domain that points to the MAIN domain. Two ways to get to the same site.

Virtual Web Hosting - I'm guessing that would be the same as Shared Web Hosting, in which you share space with other users on a server
Virtual Private Server - a portion of a computer that only YOU have access to
Dedicated Server - an entire computer all for yourself.

Hope that helps answer your questions.

I can think of fifty other questions to ask as well. Are you moving your site, designing a new site, upgrading?

Very true, when picking a new host a lot of questions come up and more so if you are just starting out for the first time.

Seems handsonhosting got your questions answered, if you have any more please let us know! :)

Good luck with everything!

A website can have more than one domain. For example, mysite.com, mysite.net and mysite.info. If you choose mysite.com as the primary domain you can park the other two domains on top of it. Its like having three paths to the same location. Domain parking is also useful for SEO. Mostly with Yahoo Search. For example, if I park xxxcheapdomains.com on top of groovywebhosting.com, there's a chance that yahoo indexing both domains as separate sites. Which will increase the possibility of getting found.

Both your main domainname and parked domainname should be registered to the same name servers, and should be resolving to the same server.

Although we're all glad to assist where we can, honestly you'll find much better explanations simply by searching google, wki, etc for a complete understanding of terms..

Domain name parking can be delivered also as separeted service not the service from the web hosting provider.
For the started I recommend wiki. I do save a lot of your time there

Yes, I remember the days of being a noobie. The most important thing I can say is make sure to do your research on a company. When I started back in 2002 - 2003 I picked up my first hosting account from the wrong provider. It took three bad experience to realize that cheap is not the way to go.

There are a couple good articles. One I found is: http://webhostinggeeks.com/articles/Web_Hosting_Guide.html. The most important thing I think of when it comes to web hosting is support. Is there going to be someone to answer my questions at 4:00 am? There is going to be someone who is kind and understanding? Are they going to explain the istuation to me in a clear manner? Are they going to be angry after explaining it 6 different ways?

While I did not have that issue many do. I would take 99.7% uptime over 99.9% uptime if someone would take care of problems. However, that is just how I am.

I assume that is the right way with mistakes and with choosing wrong providers. And I assume many people follow this way and if you have managed to skip this step you are in luck

Try researching the internet about the mentioned topics.
Topics such as reseller hosting,VPS Hosting as well as basic hosting are easily available throughout the Internet.

I would say, you should go and try to a basic hosting plan with any host. You will gain experience from then. Without real pratical experience, you will not no. Hosting service is now so cheap. It worth to try and worth to learn. :)

Unless your data is of NO value to you, then do NOT just host with any host. How much hosting cost has no relevance to its worth to you as a client. Spend an appropriate amount of time researching providers.

I am sure you have your point of view, but for me back to year 1999 - 2000, this is what i did to gain those experience. :D

If you're a business owner, you owe it to your employees and clients to make responsible decisions. The business data that you entrust to a provider can make or break your company. Statiistically, companies that lose their data rarely survive past one year.

A few minutes on the phone with prospective providers will provide invaluable insight into their operations and ability to support your business. Ask lots of questions relevant to your operations. Ask about upgrade paths. Will they customize a solution for you?

Don't know what a term means? Google it or look it up in Wikipedia. Ask for advice in forums like HD.
