How to choose a hosting company that will maintain good services over the years?

To maintain a good & long relationship with a server hosting provider, it is extremely important to research about it. Research should be done such that it satisfys business requirements.
When it comes to hosting, see that the server provider gives better server uptime. Server uptime should be nearly 99.995% to ensure business productivity. Also, see to that technical support is provided by them round the clock. This will ensure that any server related issues are solved instantly.
Server hosting services provided should be standard. Vps hosting,dedicated server hosting,cloud server hosting & colocation services should be provided.
These are some of the requirements which you should check & have before you associate with any hosting provider.
 
Do you think it would help to choose the largest hosting companies? Are they less likely to be bought out? Some of the hosting companies my clients chose were small, independent businesses. Do I steer them away from the smaller sized options?

It will all depend on your decision. For me, I would seek out to reach small enterprises who are able to provide something as good as the large enterprise. As with large enterprises, it would mean that they would not have the ability to give you a response as quick as the small enterprises do.

It is not relevant here but to compare large enterprises like Samsung, had to give them a call every single time to work on my issue and it's still not resolved. :crash::crash::crash:

There is an immense number of companies offering cloud hosting services so it becomes sometimes difficult to choose the perfect one for your business and for this, you need to go with the following guidelines which really help you in selecting the best provider:
1. Their Pricing structure of your
2. Enjoy the trial period of the provider
3. Check their technical support
4. Check the reviews of the provider
5. Availability of Add-ons
 
Beyond finding which web hosts are out there, it's a matter of digging through different plans, comparing inclusions, and checking customer reviews.

Largest hosts are more likely to be bought out.

I would stay away from them and small hosts.

I would also always go with a hosting company that you know operates their own equipment / network. Stay away from resellers ..
 
Give some time to jazz something and let track with simultaneous problem discussion and then just feel what is time of response for your problem If their response time. I think this is best way to jazz any company is this work or not.

depends on what is wrong with your website if they host will help as a host will help with server side issues only, if you install an incompatible plugin etc that breaks your site then that is your problem to fix.

24/7 support does not guarantee someone in person will be able to help as that just stated you have some support option 24/7. this could be a FAQ/Knowledgebase that is available 24/7.

24/7 Live support is when they guarantee someone in person is their to help
 
I think that is an incorrect assessment. Larger companies are the ones that generally try to hire their own staff, because they are at the stage when they can afford it and want to control things better. What you may have meant is that larger companies place lower value on each individual client because they have 100,000 other clients to worry about.

Another problem with outsourcing - which our owner's previous company experienced - is keeping the level of knowledge high enough in your support team.

It helps if your support team has direct access and a close relationship with your developers. It's just not the same if all communication is by email.

So now we keep our support team in-house, literally next door to the techies.

- Provider History - you can check in about us page
- Reviews - Hostadvice, google etc

True reviews and history of the company will help you to get an idea on the hosting / support company's and its quality over the past years. Mostly customers will be adding negative reviews some where in the forums in which they are active even though true positive reviews are very rare to see but some customers who are extremely happy might refer them in the posts.

Another option to check is make sure you check the response time and live chat response timing is as mentioned in the SLA by trying some small level of service with them like if you are trying a hosting company, then try a shared hosting pakage, if you are testing support company, then try using some of their hourly pakage if possible or and make sure they are true to their SLA.
 
There can be many factors to take into discussion. Reviews are a good indicator, forums like this are super helpful too. Word of mouth is always a good indicator, ask in your circle of connections.
 
Agreed with others. Check to see how active the company is in forums and other social media. Checking WHOIS data or archive.org to see just how long the company's website has been around can also be a good indicator.

Be careful with that, though: a website being around for a long time doesn't necessarily mean that the company has been. They could have just bought the domain (which, incidentally, is what we did! But we've been around - under other names - for 20+ years).

Definitely true. The age of a domain name shouldn't be the only determining factor.

But a domain name that was registered last month and is selling web hosting plans will definitely come across as more shady than a domain name that has been around for 20 years.

Now does that mean that the 1 month old domain is not legitimate? No. But does it mean that the 20 year old domain is not legitimate? Probably not, since it has a higher chance of having a higher reputation.

Companies House will only have a record if they are a Limited Company or partnership in the UK and Wales.

if they are a Sole trader then they wont be registered anywhere except HMRC for tax purposes.

Although in the UK any company that stores personal details are legally obligated to register with the Information Commissioner under The Data Protection Act or after 25 May 2018 The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679
