How to begin offering VPS services

Hello all,
Believe it or not, I have been hosting websites since I was 10 years old. 7 years later, I am studying for my CCNA and RHCE, in addition to working as a network admin at my high school. I am looking to expand my hobby of hosting websites into the foundations of a legit business.

As I have mentioned in another thread, I have started advertising my services locally, focusing on the small business niche, with much success. This is in addition to already hosting clients I've obtained from my site.

I have had 3 or 4 requests for VPS services over the last few months, but I had to refuse. The problem is, I currently host my clients on 2 VPS machines, and do not have the dedicated server needed to run open-vz.

I want to purchase a dedi, and install Virtualizor (Open-VZ) as a VPS control panel. I want to then migrate my existing clients to a VPS machine on the dedicated server. I am skeptical of "placing all my eggs in one basket", and thus inquire your opinion. At this point in time, I do not have the budget to purchase a dedicated server for the sole purpose of hosting VPS machines.

Should I just wait? Or should I precede?

I think you will be ok. Check with your dedi provider about backup options for at least the container that hosts your web hosting clients.

Virtualization rests on the eggs in one basket scenario. I have a client that needs their four physical servers upgraded. If they accept my proposal I will not only be upgrading them but virtualizing them putting all four servers onto one box

Does your current provider have a VPS reseller program?

This will then allow you to offer VPS without the outlay of a dedi, most that offer such programs will offer white label, so they wont know you are reselling services for another provider.

Does your current provider have a VPS reseller program?

Eh, I like to steer away from any sort of reseller programs. I have had bad experiences before with them.
If I do offer VPS services, It will be on my own servers. I'm not saying all reseller programs are bad, Its just my personal opinion on them.

I believe the OP is asking if its advisable to put the VPSes containing his web hosting business on the same node that will serve his new VPS plans. He has the budget for a dedicated server if he can consolidate his current VPSes onto the same dedi. He is not asking if he should resell VPS or get his own server.

Am I right?

their again you did not read

i offered him advise as he stated he did not have the budget for a dedi and he replied with a sensible answer

Gentlemen, all is good!

Yes I did ask about putting all my clients on one physical node, but I am open to whatever advise you have to offer

Thanks everybody for the replies. I have a good idea of what I will be doing now. But, that being said, I am still open to any last minute ideas. I think it is a binary question, but as easyhostmedia stated there are other options available.

.

That's what I thought. It seemed the thread was going to trend away from the main question of consolidating your hosting clients on same node as the vps clients, which I wanted to hear more about also

I'm glad you got it sorted out. :)

I don't know how to do it,please give me more details, thank you.

Artashes beat me too it, but yes what do you want to do.

As you are a dedicated hosting company you should already know

1) how to place client accounts onto one physical node
2) install Virtualizor (Open-VZ) as a VPS control panel

With such little experience is it a wise move to expand into VPS just yet? Maybe stick with your current offerings then introduce someone with some experience once you can afford it.

Could potentially save you a bad image when things go wrong and you have no clue how to fix them.

i agree

But if you offer unmanaged VPS, this this should not be an issue

Eventually this will be a problem. Should hardware fail to the extent a migration is needed would he be able to do that (Look at JaguarPC a couple months back) among the million other things that can go wrong with an unmanaged VPS provider.

yes, but in general it wont be a problem, but that's why i suggested a VPS reseller program (yes their are some bad programs out their, but their are some good ones too)

If you are looking for an expansion into the VPS market, I think you should take the step and move to a dedicated server. However, note that you have to manage the server yourself. If you are confident of this, then going for a dedicated server is better.

If you will be moving into the VPS market defiantly go with a reseller program.

The advantages for you are:

*Little experience - As mentioned offering an unmanaged VPS will save you a lot of headaches / problems + you will have support for when things go wrong.

Will also be initially less expensive with a very small or no monthly fee (vs dedicated server + licensing costs).
