Help a noob please

I am planning to open a vBulletin forum. The expected stats in 6 months time frame is : 15k threads, 3 lakh posts and 2500 members.
We would be having a traffic of 15-20 users/guests on an average but sometimes the number might be 50-60 users/guests.

Would it be ok to start with shared server? I am actually worried about the CPU usage thing as space & b/w would not be an issue.
I enquired hostgator as well as urljet for the same and they asked to start on with shared server. ulrjet said appx 200 concurrent users would not be a problem. Is this true?

Please help me what should i do as VPS servers / semi dedicated are a bit costly to start with but would be ok after 6 months.

Also recommend some good hosts.
I can also post the link of a forum for example. (didn't posted as i didn't wanted to advertise any forum here).

awaiting response.

I personally would start with a provider that offers Shared, Semi-Dedicated and VPS's so you can upgrade rather seamlessly. Considering you haven't launched your site yet there is no reason why you can't start out with a standard shared hosting plan then upgrade to semi-dedicated or a VPS when it's warranted. With many hosts 200 concurrent connections on a shared hosting plan is not something that is really feasible if all those connections are accessing MySQL at the same time.

Like I mentioned above. Pick a host that can offer you a seamless (or next to) upgrade and start with a standard shared plan.

Oh wonderful dude. Thanks a lot. Can you suggest such good hosts?

If you are going to have 50-60 users on average at any given time, most shared hosting companies will shut the website down.

I'd go with a VPS or better. Contact our support team if you need further assistance.

Hi there, personally I would try every bridge as providers differ greatly in what they will and won't allow especially with simultaneous users and it's not really common knowledge or described clearly in a TOS (terms of service).
The following advice depends on your users and the type of community but most will understand that sites progressively move through providers as they climb up the food chain. HD being a prime example with the move to HandsonHosting.

Start with providers that offer moneyback guarantees and provide from shared through to dedicated with a number of trusted payment methods (paypal.. googlecheckout.. moneybookers) a great place to looks is both here, in the market section and on other similar forums.

This allows you to build and run the site as cost efficiently as possible utilising the spared budget for advertising and similar areas to advance your community but also then to move onward with the same provider if their services are as you expect using the then gained word of mouth as your primary advertising source.

If not at an early stage you have moneyback guarantees etc to allow you to judge their services for yourself.

i would start with a shared server and see how it gos. if your host says you have used lot of the cpu/ram.. then move to a vps...

VPS will help you with this requirement, you can run the website with no problems, I'll suggest you to select VPS at initial stage only as you might face some problems with shared one.

I agree with RDS-Scott. Why waste your money upfront when you can start with plans that match your usage and upgrade as needed. Ask your prospective provider if they upgrade your account seamlessly. :)

Best you do start shared and work your way up. A good web host is scalable and would be able to grow with you. Anything else and you would be wasting money. Also don't be sure you would be at that size in 6 months. Many people assume the same when they start their forum. It's harder than it looks.

I did it exactly the way RDS-Scott and Steve-Hostirian suggested and it was perfect for what I needed! I've been able to upgrade as traffic has gone up on my site and I've needed more.

I noticed that other posters also promoted their services, but did not get banned or have their post removed. My intent is not to have that happen, but to understand where you draw the line. Is it ok as long as you are discreet about it? I did not see the above removed post so I have nothing to compare the other to.
