"Green" Hosting? How Important Is It?

Just the new hosting fad. People will catch on soon enough and something else will be used to advertise..

going for GREEN hosting doesnt matter much.it doesnt effect the environment at big extent.so its your own wish whether you want to go GREEN or not.

Based on what? A couple years back I heard datacenters starting using more than the entire airline industry! Whilst one server might not be to such an extent, when you add up every datacentre etc... it makes a huge impact.

Of course my opinion is that 99% of the web hosts use green as a marketing gimmick, the other 1% are serious about it. I guess the majority of the 99% can simply say they are a green host if the datacentre says they are green and advertise the datacenters efforts on their own website?

Yes, I've seen hosts do that. If their data center has a low PUE rating, than they will surely use that as a marketing tool. Just look at HostGator for example. Their page is plastered with how they are "Wind Powered".

You may have heard that. People hear a lot of things.
It is complete nonsense.
I like to base my decisions on fact.
Some industry needs to use energy. There are ways to reduce but at the end of the day if the reductions include interruptions in service you will die as and industry.
The data center is a LONG LONG way from ever overtaking the airline industry in pollution or carbon gasses and most likely never will overtake them.

Its just that it is important for any company to do its bit when it comes to saving the environment. Even if a company does not mention that it's based on the green hosting concept, it does not mean that the company is bad. The responsible and well managed web hosting companies generally make their contribution to the environment.

Most hosting providers nowadays offer green hosting to attract customers, but this is just a marketing trick to attract more customers.

<MOD NOTE: Mention of a hosting company snipped.>

It would be literally impossible for a host/datacenter to be 100% green. Computers and electronics themselves give off harmful chemical emissions just because they're running. I've always found humor in running across a host that claims to be "100% green"

I feel it just marketing sort of thing

other then that solor or wind power is quit strong but i have doubts about running datacenter on those type of power

I heard about this type of hosting very recently .... there concept is good .... but I'm confused how it gonna happen mm Its alll marketing tricks to attracts customers..

Do oyu know how much energy a data centre consumes? Green hosting is a marketing Gimmick .... DO you think DC use alternate power source??

Well, I don' think that Green hosting really exist. From my point of view, this is just a new marketing strategy to find customers who are environment friendly.

Solar power can produce more than enough energy to power an entire datacenter. It just depends on how much the dc is willing to invest.

Apple's massive solar array - http://www.businessinsider.com/photos-apples-massive-solar-array-2013-4?op=1
(powering Apple's data center)
LOL too funny.

If there is a natural disaster that destroys the solar array, then the datacenter will be offline...? Fossil fuels to the rescue! A datacenter is basically a nuclear fall out shelter. Does that idatacenter look like it could survive...? Better call the igenius to get crackin on fixin the idatacenter...oh wait, he's still finishing ihighschool...

The most important aspect is making sure that you get best of support and web hosting features. Ofcourse green web hosting is a good concept. As long as you are getting all the basic features and hosting resources, you are good to go.

A host can be green by just using energy efficient servers, that also is in the best interests of the host as it means lower power bills ;)

I've been seeing a ton of "green hosting" services, with a new one seemingly popping up every other day.

Does it really matter if your hosting services are 'green'? I've always been an environmentally friendly person, but honestly, I see this whole green hosting thing as being just another marketing trend. A new way for hosts to take advantage of the consumers, and the current worldwide trends and interests of our society.

What are your views on green hosting? Would you pay extra to host at a green host? (or if you operate a hosting network, would you pay to invest in a green datacenter?)
Does it even concern you?

Yes this is just a marketing and advertising techniques used to capture more clients, their services can be excellent as well as poor, you never know, hope it helps.

Well of course its marketing though it wouldn't really have any direct effect on the quality of hosting.

Hosting companies want clients, and they know by making themselves look "greener" they are potentially opening up their doors to those specific clients.

Hosts may decide to invest into green credits, or charities which plant trees etc... to offset / match their environmental impact. Fact is hosting is not green, though some hosts go out more than others to be "greener" which in turn can bring in more clients.

Yes i completely agree with youon that, but marketing is not free nowadays, not like in 2004, where it was so easy to become a top host :), if you get my point.
