Google announced "Not Secure" warning starting July 2018

Perception is reality, so that lock icon goes a long way towards the know, like and trust factor for prospects looking to purchase something.
But also means fraudsters and scammers can look trustworthy using the free SSL certs.

while a paid SSL cert will give a site an SSL assurance badge

Generally unrelated.

Over what time period are you monitoring the keywords and how far did they drop? Did they bounce around, or disappear? Keep in mind, depending on the volatility of the word, it would not be uncommon to drop rankings for a few days, then appear again. Some people see drops for a week and bounce back while Google is testing.

When changing from HTTP to HTTPS you may see a drop for a day or two but then right back in position again. It's rare, but I've seen it happen.

The free certs dont give validation badges, good thing with the free cpanel certs is if you have a paid ssl, this will secure main domain, but not any sub domains, so cpanel auto SSL will add SSL to the sub domains.

Let's Encrypt SSLs are now wildcard ones - so they can secure subdomains like the paid ones.
