Flash Intros

I think there is a place for flash and then their isn't, If I go to a business site and see the flash player and it is loading and has the little progress bar or not, if it doesn't load rather quickly I leave, but if I am looking at sites say for web design I will generally wait just to see what the site looks like or if it is just someones personal site.

I hate them. I hate flash to death. Especially intros with no way to skip.

You will do worse on search engines - the main page not having the content, but a one further done = bad

56kers will leave, dont want to wait for a stupid animation to load

I will leave ;) = I hate Flash to death.

I agree with MaTrIx.. they do suck, I especially hate the ones with music... I tend to listen to alot of music on my computer so they interfere with each other and make me very mad :P

Well,

They Interfere when I'm listening to Online Radios on Winamp 5 :(

Not a big problem for me, I think it all depends on the quality of the flash intro. I hate those cheesy ones that have some corny hip hop music in the backround AHHH!

I would agree with Unix.... I dont mind short flash intros... as long as they are on topic... and they actually are eye apealing. I hate having to wait through POS intros though.

If people do have intros... they need to make sure they have a skip option. If you have noticed in the past year or so... most sites have dropped flash intros, and actually incorporated their intro like ideas into a flash navigation bar.

If they are going to have a skip option, make sure it isnt in the flash movie itself, I have seen that mistake made so many times. You have to wait for the thing to load before you can skip it

I think a lot of businesses have moved away from flash intro's (unless it is part of their busienss work) and moved towards flash headers. You see a lot of web sites these days with flash navigation and short media clips in their headers.

One problem I do see these days it that people put so many high quality graphics into the flash animations that they take 10-30 seconds to load... and personally, I hate waiting for stuff to load. I'll more than likely browse over to another site, than sit and wait.

It's taken a while, but the "oooooo sex-say" factor has finally worn off of Flash intros. People, even toy-loving VPs who keep breaking their home computer's "cup holder", do not see Flash as the coolest hippest gotta-have-it-or-the-other-kids-will-laugh-at-me thing.

I won't go so far as to say that they recognize the overall value of usability, but they've abandoned that particular e-fetish.

I think it was the NFL's site - they had a VERY effective use of Flash. Instead of Javascript rollovers in their sidebar, their sidebar was a Flash navigation. It was a well-optimized file, it looked good, it worked well, and it was less of a page dependency than the same thing would have been had it been done with JavaScript.
