Fastest growing company?

rackshack has a lot of domains because they do servers, it really depends on what your looking at. If you look at "rackshack" number of customers to someone else doing say shared because the numbers would be hire..

Not sure but I thought verio was still number one but they have had a lot of problems over the past few years keeping up it seems since NTT go a hold of them..

1 and 1 (spit) are part of United Internet - *huge* company,
t/over in the 200 million € range 1st 6 months of the year
2.4 million customers
1/2 a million adsl customers

a lot of their money and *most* of their profit comes from other busienss, like teh ad compnay and the media/broadcast side as well as the telecoms - as Andrew said - they *lose* money on the hosting & domains

We have a complaints section running on 1 & 1 Hosting. They are the most inept bunch I have ever come across. Five weeks it took them to set up our dedicated server and then it didn't work. Five months later and we are still waiting on our refund! They may be able to do the single user host a web page type of thing but they are completly clueless about dedicated servers.

Oh and they don't tell you they are not a domain registrar. Try changing your nameservers or getting the domain transferred away!

I won't put the link to our site here because i'm not sure on the policy of this site but if anyone has something to add to our 1 & 1 section please give me a shout.

I'll add that I've never had a problem with one and one.

I've never used their dedicated service but there's nothing wrong with their shared services.

Yeah not knocking their shared service. I think thats what they are good at. Or at least I have only heard very few complaints in that direction. But it's not exactly rocket science.

Dedicated servers on the other hand are not for people who don't know what they are doing and in this respect, 1 & 1 definitly bit off more than they could chew!

I'm not sure if they operate some sort of Franchise system, but the people we spoke to here in the UK were completly clueless. I wouldn't put them in charge of a phone let alone a dedicated server ;)

I've never dealt with their UK branch.
With a company that grows at the rate that one and one has grown, especially with the expansion into the North American market, I guess it's reasonable to assume that they won't have top notch tech people at every station.
Maybe when the settle down a little.

ev1servers is great, you see like 250 servers one day and on the other one, sold out. +!, is instand activation and their prices are good. I currently have 2 servers with them, the only problem I have is that they are unmanaged so if something happens I must fix it.

+, there support is 100% best I have seen.

I wouldn't be surprised if 1and1 or ev1servers were the fastest growing hosting companies on the internet, although I do have a theory that a business can only grow so fast before it is put out on its ass :)

Can they keep up, it will make for entertaining watching I can assure you that. As is it evident the moment a hosting company begins to deteriorate.

i dont think so ev1 will fail.. they seem to be very responsible in what they do and there staff is really good into finding and fixing things

Funny Ipowerweb is our neighbor, they are about 4 doors down the hall. I wouldn't mind taking a peek sometime to see what their secret is. I know they have a big add in pcmag and I have seen them in others as well also they have a affiliate program with cj which is really huge.

I think you just have to decide risk a bad reputation and deal with bulk or have a premium service and focus on stable customer base.

Just like ATI they now in a bad status with the BBB and have tons of bad publicity all over the web since they grew faster then they could keep good quality with.

Thanks to ipowerweb and 1and1 is not ATI isn't even the cheapest, they are just cheap, have a bad rep and most likely have and allot of extra p3's laying around.

I try to plan long term when we go over strategies and bulk and long term rarely go together unless your costo or walmart. I think it's usually a get rich quick and quit plan.

What you think?

I agree with you.. I think it's better to focus on growing your business by establishing a strong reputation for support and overall management. Not that I'd complain if 3000 people signed up a day, mind you.. but I don't think even some of the big fat cats are always prepared to handle such a load..

In my opinion, some of the smaller guys who really give you their best in terms of support and dedication are worth even more than the larger companies where you become a number real quick, and often overlooked. I've been on both sides.. involved in e-commerce for over five years, being hosted with the smallest and the largest over time, and all of my best experiences were with the smaller, more personal companies.

How do they calculate?

Well, most of the calculations based online are made out of DNS lookups.
So, they dig the domain name registry and calculate how much domains are using given nameservers.

While the results are relatively true, it must be taken ino consideration that:

1. Not all domains using a given hosting company nameservers is a real hosting account. For example you have a hosting account and you have 20 parking slots there. So you park 20 domains and then the DNS shows 20 more domains - but these are not 20 real hosting accounts/clients

2. Some companies do not use centralized DNS servers. This means that they have separate Nameserver pair for each 500-1000 sites hosted. Most of these online statistics do not take this into account. Let's say a company has 20 pairs of dns servers, with different names. Usually, they will not get into the calculation at all.

3. And finally, some site owner prefer to use external DNS, not to use the host nameservers - so in this case another number goes here that is not calculated into those stats.

One more name in reseller hosting is hostgator...also have a very nice idea about ipowerweb and its support ;) hostgator occurs to be a lot better...

You'll never see a reseller provider on those lists, as one of the primary offerings of a reseller provider, is anon. dns.

It should also be noted that a company using true dns clustering (as Vincent hinted at) will get the proverbail 'shaft' in the netcraft-like results.

hostgator

Is there anyone else that evens attempts to offer the same features as Hostgator's unlimited domain account with Fantastico for $9.95 a month?

I think that's why Hostgator is growing so fast. They offer so much for so little.

Their reseller plans are growing faster then the shared hosting.

I read in the news that they get about 3000 new sign ups in a month.
