Local advertising is definitely cheaper than trying to compete online. Also, MANY people like to buy local, so you win on that front too. Going one step further and having a local number for the market you're targeting will solidify the deal. 800 numbers are nice, but LOCAL is a whole different ball game!
Also, if you're a local business, write up articles about your business that would be helpful to other small business owners. Send that info to your local newspapers - if they have room and need filler - your article goes in Press releases are wonderful things - EVERYONE uses it as filler - newspapers, radio and TV. Don't forget your local TV stations - those "feel good" happy segments they run at the end of the local news, often that's just someone like me sending info to them
