Does Your Reseller Account Offer Backups?

Many reseller providers offer monthly/weekly/daily backups, but IMO you should take extra measures on your own.

I suspect an awful lot of clients don't really know how often their provider performs backups, if they do at all. Bottom line - its your data and your business. Don't entrust your livelihood to a vendor - make ample backups on your own.

i see that you are providing hosting so try not to mess with backups
i mean you do need to have backups but also tel your clients to make their own backups

For reseller accounts:
1) Backup to another server nightly in the same DC.
2) Weekly we copy those backups to a NAS unit in the office.
3) At the reseller's request, free annually we'll mail a cd/dvd with the weekly backup on it - after that it's $5 plus shipping

For VPS'es:
1) Daily rsync to a remote server in another DC with 7 days of archives
2) Nightly vzdumps to the same server
3) Weekly backup of the vzdumps to the NAS in the office
4) Annually cd/dvd free, $5 + shipping for additional

While not backup... All of our server have at least RAID 1 if not RAID10 arrays. We had a drive go out in a VPS node about a week ago. A replacement was overnighted direct to the DC, hot-swapped and re-sync'ed. During that we started copying the vzdumps (much easier to restore from) offsite just in case of another failure - we could move them to another node quickly if need be. If it wasn't for our sending out announcements about the drive failure, plan of attack, and status updates - I don't think the customers would have even known...

But I'm a FIRM believer in multiple backups in multiple locations... and we don't count backups towards bandwidth or disk quotas. That's just something we figured into offering a 'wholesale' product that others are counting on. We do also strongly suggest customers make their own backups - if it were my business I would.

offsite backup is very important , even to 2 remote sites!
for my servers i use an offsite ftp server + i got a server at the office which connects via an ssh tunnel and rsyncs the whole backup directory.

and ofcourse , make sure your hardware is redundent too! i recommend implementing RAID array on your server.

BUT NOTE! - RAID IS NOT INSTED OF BACKUP!!!

What? Try not to mess with backups? Bottomline for clients is that its their data and their business if the site or provider disappears - beyond all else they need to make ample backups, regardless. Even contracting with the provider doesn't cover lost revenues - there are always legal clauses that cover the providers liability.

A year back a friend of mine was in hosting business and was earning good. But oneday when the something happened to his server he lost everything. All his clients were lost. And since he was not having ne backups he had to start again which he never did.

I wouldn't expect many customers to come back to that, nor should they, even though I'm a firm believer in self backups.

My company always provides backups for its clients, the backups are made once in 24 hours.Sometimes it is really important to keep backups because it happens that the customer cancels his/her account and in some time decides to restore it. He/she pays for the new plan and asks to restore the backup of his/her data and the customer gets really upset in case the data backups are not available anymore.

So that is why it is recommended to keep backups for at least two months :):)

If you have a Reseller hosting package then I would surely Recommend a Backup solution. The reason for this is the fact that you will have to make sure that you make the Hosting package Reliable for your Customers. Also, Offsite backup space is recommended. It is possible to configure the Backups according to you and Most probably the Hosting provider can do that for you if you purchase a Managed hosting package from the Hosting provider. It is suggested that you Schedule the backups on hourly basis as this will a good option. However, it also depends on your requirements.

Well that proves the point why the customer should have not cancelled. :) If the client is paying the bill and being friendly the backups definitely are a bonus to any experience; however, I have always taken the mindset that you if cancel and you stopping paying then you have transfered the responsibility on to you. I do not understand why a client who cancelled would be mad at the provider for not holding backups when they stopped paying the bill.
