We've purchased ads a number of times. One of the best places to advertise are up and coming websites related to the hosting industry. Their prices are usually relatively cheap - 1/4 of that larger sites would charge, and their memberships are generally descent.

I tried via Adwords but not to much. I'm a seo person and I look very much for what will get me results with no cost.
However I'm aware that at a certain level ads will help.

Nope. Did do adwords campaign (with some free $100 and another $400). I am tiny and local design and getting started on hosting. I guess I am small enough (this is side biz) and get enough referrals I really have not gone after it. If I wanted to get going, and get going quick, I could definitely see the value in forum/banner ads. Not sure what the ROI on it is.

When you limit yourself to only one outlet for ads and marketing I just have to ask; what happens when that avenue dries up? We are always looking for new ways to advertise, the day you slow down is the first day before you head down the lonely road of going out of business or dropping your sales down enough that you wish you had tried another path instead of "winging it".

So so, I purchase plenty of cheaper ones and try to stay away from the $400 a month adds etc, also have a dabble in adwords from time to time.

It is great for traffic even if you dont make sales.
