Data Center In Basement?

I did a search on youtube and I found lots of people running DC out of there house. I wonder how many of them run a web hosting business. I myself would like to own my own DC but thats a long time from now and I wouldn't have it in my house.

I just saw the videos you were referring to on Youtube. I'm pretty sure the bills must be very high. I wonder what kind of connection they are running though.

what search terms were used on youtube?

I did a few searches but didn't come up with much. I did find a guy who setup his gaming computer with multiple servers, but his lack of cooling will surely cause issues later! ;)

I did a search for home datacenters. Its pretty interesting seeing all of those different setups for severs and stuff.

Yes, I just searched for home datacenter. Not much results but the video page links to other relevant content. Some of the setups are pretty cool but it basically just looks like a hobby than it does building an actual home datacenter.

well I found some guy on there with what looks like a rats nest for wiring, maybe 4 servers, ZERO Cooling (other than an AC unit installed on the wall) and that was about it. Anyone going the cheap route, hey, have at it. I wouldn't trust it as far as I can throw it ;)

I've actually got about 80 1U servers in my garage here (took them out of service, now I'm stuck with them). I have 3 slaved for my gaming system, and I use a couple for server testing, and another for music - but there's no way I'd open it to the public to run an operation out of here.

Well to start with, you are going to have a lot of issues getting a proper internet connection for servers in a rural area. You can try getting one from your ISP but they aren't going to like it(or it's just going to cost you A LOT)

Stuck with them, eh? I can take some of them off of your hands if you like:rolleyes2

If interested in them drop me a PM. I'll get your some specs and you come up with pricing :)

I SHOULD make another posting in the sales area and do an inventory of what I have and specs etc. I"ll see if I can work on that this week :)

That is quite a mind blower to make your basement your datacenter.

You're also paying your datacenter for the stable FAST connection.
Hosting a few sites here and there but you will be able to host a ton of sites like a real datacenter is capable of doing.

As Jordan mentioned there are many things to consider that make your clients sites run like clock work.

Re: ISP Restrictions

Also note, if you operate a server out of your house, your ISP may not like you. It's most likely against their terms of service.

And like with any other business, if you are the only one with access to the machines, that means NO vacations! I'd strongly advise going through a hosting provider that provides Managed Hardware replacements, and even for that matter, when starting out, managed software solutions.

I know in another thread you mentioned that you wanted to bring in a partner to help get things going, but there's more to the hosting business than setting up a computer and installing Apache.

I know for a fact you can get bandwidth from Time Warner or AT & T in your residence and do what you want I have done it. I did however move it to a building more suited for it but it can be done and is allowed by the bigboys. Yes you will have to purchase the bandwidth which for me at that time was $800 a month for a 3 mb pipe However in this day and age you can get 15 mb up and down relatively cheap with the big boys blessing. However you probably can't get enough bandwidth to sufficiently serve a large customer base.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys over the past time I called my ISP and they said they wont allow it, I got there number from my internet provider verision.

Basement DC != Good Idea.
You're better off colocating, and it's really not that expensive. The issue with your own DC is addressing cooling, redundent power & the network. The investment you'll have to make to reseolve those issues is considerable.

Then again there's not reason you can't setup a http://diywebserver.com/ to just experiment, host a few personal/friends sites.
