colocation hosting

Colocation hosting is nothing but you are sharing bandwidth with the server colocation provider; this is how you avoid bandwidth charges. You can also rent a server from the server colocation provider. In that case, you own no part of the process but only data.

That did not make any sense. In colocation you pay for actual bandwidth that you purchase which is not shared with anyone else thats why colocation is costly in some cases.

Like you, I am also familiar with shared, dedicated and VPS web hosting. So colocation web hosting is a new concept for me. Colocation is the provisioning of space, bandwidth, and power in a data center.

What? With colocation, you're still paying for bandwidth. A certain amount of transfer is normally included in the provider's package.

2 reasons I really prefer colocation over dedicated because I have actual access to the hardware and I own the servers so I can make adjustments to what I want.

This is one of the greatest benefits of colocation. Typically if you add hardware / RAM / HDD's to a dedicated server or even VPS plans, you increase your monthly expense. If I can go buy a stick of RAM for $100 or less, and put it in my own server, then I can avoid the $25 or more (depending on the dedicated server provider) per month.

There are pro's and con's just as Steve mentioned earlier, but many colocation providers are helping bridge the gap between those who think they need dedicated and those who can actually move to a colocation environment and in-turn save on their monthly hosting expenses.

I don't like the fact of unsupervised people in the data center who could be right next to your cabinet. Is there any colo where people are led to the cabinet and watched?

Cages or private suites can offer more privacy and physical protection of your equipment.

Most data centers will have security cameras that staff members monitor.

Colocation is a type of data centre where many customers can locate network, server and store gear and interconnect to a variety of telecommunications and other network service provider or providers with a low cost and complexity.

Colocation means you buy your own hardware and place it in some datacenter. You will pay only for the rackspace, IPs, electricity and the datatraffic!

The charges taken for Colocation are really much. I think it is better to rent a server than colocating.

Colocation is when you buy your own server then send it off to a datacenter for use. Its like a dedicated server but you actually own the server. This makes for hosting per month to be cheaper but the up front capital is more money

Colocating the server gives you the greatest flexibility. You get to choose the hardware configuration of the server and the software that goes on it. The hosting company maintains the connection to the Internet and deals with environmental details such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), fire controls, and air conditioning. On the other hand, you're responsible for that server's upkeep

Despite that most people who use web hosting service get the meaning of "Colocation Hosting", most do not realize that it is actually an enterprise level hosting service. Anyone who colocates servers might not need a networking equipment if they have a few servers, but if the want a large capacity it is a must. There are many other things which are industry topics and are not something consumers know. So I understand why would anyone ask such a questions about colocation. Fo many people is hard to calculate the positives and negatives of choosing colo plan instead of going for a dedicated server.
