Choosing a Good Domain Name

While registering a domain name that your main company website will use, I will indicate certain things that you should avoid:

1. There is a possibility of forgetting your domain name while typing the name into the browser or e-mailing you if you use a hyphen. So, avoid hyphen to reduce future problems.

2. Try not to use digits in your domain name. For example, if it is 3.com, you have to inform everyone that it is "3" instead of "three".

3. Make it as short as possible as the maximum length should be 3 words or 20 characters.

The above mentioned aspects have to be thought out with due consideration for your main company domain name.

Thanks but i disagree with 2. totally as if you use digits eg, 1 then your webpage will be above other sites in directories providing they are sorted alphabetically.

Hello,

Great article but I think these rules will completly depend on the type of site and it's purposes. For example some sites are only created to gain search engine traffic. Those sites will benefit from lots of keywords in the domain.

domains

I agree with jack it depends on what the website is created for. For affiliate sites or any site that you want high in the serps you'll want keywords in your domain. For sites that you want really short and listed high in alphabetical directories than you can use numbers and short words.

I do agree the above mentioned the instructions while choosing domain name. But one thing is in my mind, as you said don't use digit like 7, but when it would be written as it is instead of seven how visitors can misunderstand it. kindly explain.

It is good if you use a number in your domain as the first letter because in SEO your domain will appear on the top, Because it is sorted out by numbers to letters. :) Cheers Mate!

I don't agree with #1 and #3:

According to google, using hyphen will help improve your search engine ranking. I have seen more and more website using this trick. <URL snipped>

it really depends on the purpose of the domain. if you're relying on people's memories (which you obviously aren't), then 3+ words and the order of words becomes a guess at best.

Disagree with 1 and 2, and I guess somewhat agree with #3.
I think a lot of what should dictate a domain name is how it's going to be advertised. Are you relying on word of mouth? SEO? Branding?

just choose a unique domain name about 6 characters long ... you will be fine

Also make sure it is brandable not some random gibberish

Domain is very important, ultimately this is what give you the worldwide visibility. A good, short and easy remembered domain is essential .... if not already taken ;)

So which is more important; brand-able name like PinkBananas.com or one with searchable keywords in it, like MyWebhostingCompany.com?
The 1st is easier to remember, and distinctive; but the 2nd tells (possibly) more about what the biz offers...

The vast majority of commercial websites reflect their company's name in the domain. When I see stuff like www.10xxxx.com versus xxxx.com, and the two are listed in the same advertisement, I wonder why? I always prefer shorter domain names, but that's just me. Keywords in your domain do help though. :)

Well, using both hyphens and numbers make it hard to give your domain name verbally and falls down on being easy to remember or type.

The great advantage of hyphenated domain name is that search engines can distinguish your keywords better and thus return your site more prominently in search results for those keywords occurring in your domain name and also the non-hyphenated form may no longer be available, the hyphenated one will make you get the domain name you want.

Also gotta make sure it doesn't mean anything else.

Awhile back I had a client who registered "Gamers-Exchange-Zone.com without the hyphens. Which can also look like Gamer-Sex-Change-Zone.com

It was pretty hilarious when I accepted the order but then he bought a new domain cause his target audience was teens and a lot of parents were concerned :P
