How does a shared host offering access to WHM differ from a reseller account?

There isn't much of a difference, however they may have certain features turned off so you might not really get to take full advantage of it anyways?

I did this long ago. Decent reseller account, a few paid hosting clients, and my hosting was free.

Well everything will come with a cost. If you plan on doing reseller then you should expect support tickets among other things, downtime, errors, etc. Advertising and getting your site known is another thing that comes with setting goals in reselling.

If you have a good amount of Money to spend and you are thinking of Reselling the Additional Resources then I would suggest you to choose a VPS hosting package or a Dedicated server. If you are short of Budget and you are thinking of to Earn some Additional Income apart from what you get from your websites then I would suggest you to choose a Reseller hosting package. Most probably, go for a VPS or a Dedicated server.

I could be wrong, but I think the OP is simply looking for a way to cover their hosting costs & not necessarily start a hosting operation with a reseller account.
