Not sure about, but they are overselling - I would think...

See this:

Reverse IP: Web server hosts 5 websites (reverse ip tool requires free login)
Server Type: Apache/1.3.31 (Unix) mod_auth_passthrough/1.8 mod_log_bytes/1.2 mod_bwlimited/1.4 PHP/4.3.6 FrontPage/5.0.2.2634a mod_ssl/2.8.18 OpenSSL/0.9.7a (Spry.com also uses Apache)
IP Address: 66.193.175.212 (ARIN & RIPE IP search)
IP Location: - Florida - Orlando - Hostdime.com Dimenoc - Infinitum Technologies

Probably a Reseller with Dedicated IP.

The company seems legit. Im not sure about the nature of their business though. There are a lot of dead links throughout the site. If you look at their server status though... it looks like they have a decent amount of servers. I dont know if they own their own datacenter like they say they do.... so you might want to check into that a little bit.

Hi HRAddict - I would def say those prices "appear" to be on the lower end of the spectrum - you never know though, the service might be great and your friend may be getting a great deal...

How critical is their site? If its just a hobby site, and downtime wont cost them anything - sure, take the chance - may end up being one heck of a deal and they may not have any downtime at all ..

PS - for the record, Im not saying this host will or will not have a large amount of downtime - Im just saying, that with those prices, the chances of having problems may go up - so, if the site isnt mission critical - its not much of a risk at all...

They are overselling...without a doubt.
Look at their biggest plan for example..
$25/month
20GB Space
200GB Bandwidth

Multiply that by four:
$100
80GB Space
800GB Bandwidth

That is a full dedicated server with full management, normaly support for small things like script problems (Most management companies don't provide that) and a control panel for $100.

To be hoenst, I wouldn't go with them even if it isn't a critical site.

Surpasshosting is owned by Hostdime; it's not a reseller. AFAIK they're a relatively big company. Considering their offer they must be overselling, but only their customers can tell if they oversell too much. ;)

Hostdime
Didn't think they would be doing something like overselling as much as surpasshosting is.
They seem to oversell a little on their bigger plans, but maybe they have a business plan that allows for that.

I don't think that makes things much clearer to be honest.

They just say the own/co-own the datacenter, an office and hire staff really

Doesn't give a reason for the low prices with large amounts of space and bandwidth.

There are a lot of other companies that own datacenters but still provide the normal price for hosting accounts.
True, if they own most things then their overall cost will be lower (With a larger upfront cost) but they still have a lot of costs, mainly staff compared to what they would be paying for bandwidth and space.

Here are the two posts made by the company:

Hello Everyone,

Surpass Hosting is a wholly owned subsidiary company of HostDime. We both fund the operations of the DimeNOC datacenter. We operate and own our servers and our own equipment. We could stop sales today and continue to operate normally.

Our data center is at this location:
111 North Orange Ave
Penthouse Suite 2100
Orlando, FL 32901

Our offices are located at this location:
111 North Orange Ave
Suite 1050
Orlando, FL 32901

No, we do not own the entire building, but we are the only ones that can go up to the top.

Here is an IP of ours to trace: 66.194.239.10

Download speed test: http://66.194.152.70/speed_test.rar

You can see a list of our servers here:
http://www.surmunity.com/showthread.php?t=3225

We also do those other things that virtual pointed out, such as hiring and firing...

Warm Regards,
Chloe
Surpass Hosting

and the other:

We started out small. As time went along and the customer base grew, of course the amount of servers grew as well. It just wasn't sensible anymore to keep leasing servers. Frankly it was a waste of money, such as renting an apartment for example. Do you agree it is better to own your own property and own equipment after some time? I surely think so, and that time can come for any business. There is a point when 2 worlds cross your mind and you have to come up with a different way to keep costs down. And the big jump to organizing a data center was our only solution. While the costs up front are massive, we were prepared for that and now we are definitely in it for the long run, and couldn't be more pleased with our decision. With everything at our fingertips and with more control, it couldn't be any better. The downside was all of the account transferring and the headaches that came with that for both ourselves and our customers. It could not have been 100% perfect, but we had to accept that fact and be ready to dust ourselves off and move on, knowing we did the right thing to continue growing and to continue providing better services.

So does owning your own data center make you a better company? Of course not. It all comes down to uptime and support, and you have to make that happen any way you can. Owning the data center only can make assumptions about a company, such as if they are a serious company that has grown so much that they needed to do that. Of course there are great companies out there that don't have their own data center. But I do believe in the future, more small companies like us will begin to branch out into that realm. It just takes much time, and a definite need and want to do so.

Don't really see how the address the issue about the cost they are charging being very low, not directly anyway.

Thanks for posting the link though Dan :)
Just hoping you can help pick out the important info :D

Well if they have been recommended that host, I assume it's for good reason. They obviously received an opinion from an end user of the service. I'd say give it a shot.
