Best place to advertise?

Personally, too much effort goes into advertising, we have a lot on it every month being paid out.

yet SEO pays off the most, despite how much advertising you do, SEO is king, all of our signups are coming from google with top ranked keywords, but forum posting is effective for good SEO building, so don't count it off the cards, do it effectively.

Really, no one will share secrets on advertising or methods, it would be silly.

But my advice, forget advertising, go SEO

Just spent the last 30 minutes doing just that :)

Anyways, when I first launched the business a few years back I went to local businesses, offered promotions to local businesses and built a good client base to cover overhead. I then went to more experimental methods online as forum posting, SEO, etc. Many people here have brought up great points.
 
Best way to advertise your hosting is locally first, then go for bigger picture, though google and web hosting forums. that is the best way to do it.
 
For those that have taken the time to create an affiliate structure - how do you find it works for you? Are there areas it works particularly well and others not so good?
 
I am surprised not many have mentioned Social Media here. It has been a major contributor for me along with forum posting.

SEO plays it's part too. But it's not a good idea to depend too much upon it alone.

Most of the longer term clients have come from word of mouth for us.

If you do have some money reserved for advertising, then go with Adwords/Bing. Both of them have got us good results recently. So it's worth a shot if you campaign properly and target the right keywords.
 
Facebook or Twitter promotions are a good way to develop a "viewer base" then can be converted to customers.

Example: Promote your company's facebook page by doing giveaways for domain names, hosting accounts, and other related products. Get your followers to enter these giveaways by "sharing" or "liking" your post.

This way, your name will get on the social feeds of your followers and will help promote your name to those who don't already know it.
 
WHT and DigitalPoint is good for us. We have also joined HostingDiscussion and hope it will be on the top of the list.
 
I agree, anywhere and everywhere. Then advertise directly against your competitors. If they have potential clients looking at them, why not at least spark a little interest? After that, referrals, referrals, referrals. In all the sales organizations, we pushed that more than anything else, just like a real-estate agent, "I'm glad we found you a house, now if you know anyone else that is in the market please give them my card"

In the hosting area word of mouth is the deal and also the forums: hostingdiscussion, digitalpoint, Webhostingtalk. Another advertising method is the blogger. A pretty good blogger with many readers will spread the word for you as no one else.
