Backup Solutions

As we all know making regular backups are crucial for any webhosting company and is most important feature customer looks for with the hosting account.

Backups are easy to automate and do at the server-side (f.ex. via WHM / Backup / Configure Backup) , but you'd always avoid backing up data on the same drive/filesystem.

For many resellers and VPS owners, it could be cost effective to use different cloud services such as Amazon S3 or even local hard drive to backup and transfer data to.

Interesting WHM plugin has been developed by http://whms3backup.com/ , which uses Amazon S3 as a backup destination, but it's not free.

Here's also a good article how to make automated backups by using rsync - http://www.tux.org/~tbr/rsync/#Resources

Please share any other useful resources you're familiar with.

Thanks.

I would recommend R1Soft backup solutions instead of Rsync to protect your crucial data. Rsync is quite good, but you should take a look at the following URL, you will find the technology comparison between both.

Have you used them personally?

It looks nice. Pricing is reasonable also. To bad its limited to cpanel sites

Yeah supporting other control panels would be a really nice feature for them to add :).

They added their reseller program recently, may be multiple-control panel is the logical next step forward for them.

We've been using r1soft, now Idera, for several years now (4 or 5 years). It's a great system, but again, remember that it's only ONE part of a backup plan - using rsync in conjunction or even using r1soft to backup another r1soft server can be very helpful in cases of catastrophic failures.

r1soft is not limited to cPanel either - I actually backup my personal windows computer using it. It also works with Plesk and other control panels. It's making a disk image, so really ANYTHING at a disk level can be backed up. There are also easy to use restore interfaces with a number of web hosting control panels.

I could not agree more even if you paid me. Some clients come to us and ask how many backup plans we have, those who have little experience with needed it are the ones that need a little hand holding. We do not mind, we would rather all customers be educated before hand to know what we can and will do, along with options that they have.

i would not touch siteautobackup.com with a bargepole as it is the same people that were behind WHMCSgold when it first appeared to WHMCS users and then did off with many peoples money

I believe Siteautobackup was also owned by Brent Oxely / HostGator with the recent EIG acquisition of HostGator not sure where that puts the backup service in terms of ownership.

Brent Oxely / HostGator were and still are a partner of Siteautobackup, but this was created by the same people who developed and so called offered WHMCSGOLD
