I believe it's better to have FAQ section and an online chat instead of a forum on a hosting site. It would be too much hassle. Twitter account may serve this purpose better instead of a forum.
A forum can be a good thing if it is moderated and if you have a community.
We ran into that question and decided to build a knowledgebase that will be opened to our customers only in the future and moderated by the people writing articles.
So my answer would be a wiki/kb is better than a forum.
Wouldn't say it's a good idea, however, a controversial one. On the one hand, it would be a great platform to engage your customers and give them a chance to be heard (which they like a lot lately). On the other hand, forums are pretty hard to control. I mean that anyone, even without a reasoned oinion can participate and slander you which affects your authority.
I think that it is a good idea to add a forum where people can ask for any questions. There are newbies who don't understand on how to run this or that web site. Good idea without any doubt.

It will depend on your prices and structure. Some free and cheap hosts wont give free support, but provide community forum , so you get support from other members
