3 year web hosting | Should buy or Not?

Most Web Hosting companies offer massive discounts on 3-year web hosting plans, but what do you think is it value for money to the customer?

In our point of view if the customer is serious about their websites, then its the best choice, but if they are planning to shut down the website within a year or so, in that case, they will lose their money, and as a Web Hosting provider we have to retain the website data which is not even active till the subscription.

I think the consumer perception in regard to highly discounted plans are driven more by budget and trust concerns, not how serious the client is about the website. They may prefer a short term contract because they are serious about the website, which gives them an easier way out in case of problems.

Given how fragile the industry is, those clients that are not ready to commit to a long-term contract are mostly not certain if the company is still going to be around a year from now.

With such long-term contracts it is often the case that the customer only sees that he can receive discount X and, unless he plans to take the website offline again after a short time, thus saves some money.
This is then exploited in such contracts and you as a provider have received the money for 3 years, but basically do not have to provide any real service if the customer stops the project after 1 year. The web hosting package is still active, but the support effort at the customer is omitted and traffic may also be less.

The most I have ever considered committing to is 1 year, things change far to quickly to commit longer. Cheaper is rarely better, there are some things you can't buy upfront and have expectations met, there's always a disconnect. Having said that, paying upfront for 3 years means you know your fixed cost is covered, until the 4th year...who knows what the rates will by in year 4.
