1 thing to remember

What is the one thing you always tell new people in the hosting world to remember when they open up shop? For me its honestly to get a good nights sleep the night before. I remember the first month we started up, looking back now it seems like it was the month that would never end and everyone was sleep deprived for one reason or another (getting the cart before the horse). :)

3 things on my check list;

1) Transparency - be up front and honest with any client
2) Honesty - if you don't know the answer, say that, and then find out
3) Patience - nothing happens overnight. It takes long hours, and trial & error

Adding to what Conor said, I always tell new people to NOT forget about their local community. New businesses start up everyday, and all of them will need hosting services - why not yours?

I like the checklist and you are dead on about the local community. We love being able to walk into a shop downtown and help other places (mainly smaller run ones) if we can. It seems some people let ego's take over after they get a few clients under their belt. Last time I talked shop out of the shop I was off getting a pedicure, best new client to date (actually wants to learn too).
