Windows update disrupts smart card logins after Microsoft security change

Microsoft’s October 2025 Windows update has left users frustrated after intentionally breaking smart card authentication in a security overhaul tied to CVE-2024-30098. The change forces RSA certificates to rely on Key Storage Providers instead of the older CSP method, causing failures in apps that depend on certificate logins. A registry tweak offers temporary relief—but only until April 2026, when Microsoft plans to remove the workaround entirely.
