VMware is about to revamp its partner strategy by introducing a new exclusive VMware Cloud Service Provider (VCSP) program, which will open on November 1, 2025. The change marks the end of the current program on October 31 and signals a sharper focus on fewer, larger partners capable of challenging the dominance of hyperscale cloud providers.
Ahmar Mohammad, VMware vice president of partners, managed services and solutions go-to-market, described the overhaul as a way to clarify what it means to carry the CSP label. “When I say CSP, I want customers to expect a clear service level agreement with a clear outcome,” he explained, noting that the redefined program should give businesses more confidence in what partners can deliver.
The revamped VCSP structure is designed to consolidate the partner ecosystem by encouraging smaller providers to merge with or sell to larger ones. “We want our CSPs to grow faster, whether that’s by acquiring the business of departing partners or buying them outright,” Mohammad said. The strategy aims to create a pool of providers strong enough to act as a counterweight to Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
Despite speculation, Mohammad emphasized that Broadcom, VMware’s parent company, has no intention of becoming a hyperscaler itself. Instead, the plan is to double down on VMware Cloud Foundation, positioning it as a private cloud alternative at a time when public cloud costs are drawing scrutiny.
Industry watchers note that the program shift is not simply about reducing partner numbers, but about building an ecosystem of committed players. Mohammad, who has previously held senior roles at both Microsoft and AWS, framed the change as a necessary reset for clarity and competitiveness. “The reduction is a byproduct,” he said. “The idea is to simplify and define what it truly means to be a CSP.”
For partners, the shift presents both risk and opportunity. Those invited into the new program gain a sharper mandate and potentially larger customer base, while others must decide whether to exit the market or align through acquisition. Either way, the November launch will redraw the VMware partner landscape and set the tone for its cloud strategy under Broadcom.
